The over-rated XI

Craig

World Traveller
This is something I'm intending on doing for my first article for Cricket Web.

If there ever were to be a thread on this, it probably would of have been by me.

So go ahead and name your over-rated world XI.

For me, Brett Lee, Andrew Flintoff have to be considered.

really dont know how you can say brett lee is over rated look at his stats.

Test: SR 50.6, not many better than that...

ODI: 27.4 and economy generally improving

as if he would not be in the first 2 bowlers picked for any other country, the first in the vast majority.

when dropped last season Brett lee did the following:

led NSW to an innings win against Tassie - taking 5/63 in the first innings and 5/86

than against SA he took 7/114 in the first innings and 4/66

he was put back into the test team after this, funny enough and has been playing brilliantly since.

I've done an article on a very similar topic already. It was entitled "Mr. Mxyzptlk's 'Oh no' XI" and it was about players who I didn't feel necessarily deserved their place in their respective side, or who shouldn't be in the side for whatever reason.

That's the 3rd best SR among active bowlers I believe.

He bowled superbly in spells in the West Indies this year, but lacked consistency.

Freddy Flintoff isn't over-rated! He is a fantastic talent only getting better with experience and as far as I am aware that's how he is regarded by most.

I don't think Lou Vincent is over rated, he isn't rated that highly at all! it seems to be that the selectors just cant think of someone to replace him so they just keep him there, and to be fair he is excellent in the field.

obviously there are some good young batsmen that should have been tried out though.

There was a massive over-rated thread about 12-18 months ago - possibly the first real CW thread that had a lot of debate IIRC!

As for your 1st 2 selections there - if the rest of the team is as mad as that then are you sure it's not a World best side you're selecting?

What do you people have against Flintoff - his performances this summer have surely ended any criticism of him as being over-rated?

6.O Banks
Have you seen Omari Banks play recently??? You can ask any Australian (supporter or player) and they will tell you that Omari Banks is certainly not over-rated.

He has very good composure and technique and has batted well for the West Indies so far. His bowling average may be high, but I seem to remember probably 5 or 6 chances going down off him. Pure and simple - he had not luck with the ball, but bowled extremely well.

5.K Sangakkara
For starters, I haven't heard trumpets blowing about Sangakarra's greatness.

Also, he has a Test average of 48+ and an ODI avge of just under 35.

I watched lots of the WI v Aus series early this year... He didnt strike me as being as good as people were making him out to be afterwards..

Hmmm... well he has very good technique and that's a fact, not opinion. He also showed moderate composure in scoring 47* to help the West Indies to a world record run-chase against what is far and away the best team in the world. It's obvious that he's not up to it...

You cant say he is up to it after one good performance, a typical instance of someone being over rated! Ill gladly rate him when i see this kind of stuff more often from him!

I would like to put forward my nominees

1.A Flintoff
*he shakes his head in utter disbelieve*

Give the bloke a break..........he was man of the series this summer.
Anyone who saw the 142 would know he isn't over-rated.....423 runs@52.87 with devastating power and timing (in a sense of batting and situational timing) i.e. the 95 off 104 balls at The AMP Oval.
