The legacy of Steve Smith

Socerer 01

International Captain
I doubt it. As we’ve seen with Kohli recently once you’ve achieved a certain level of success in tests for your country it can be pretty hard to get dropped.
India always let their old stars overstay their welcome though due to worshipper culture

So where does Smith stand as of today? Personally, would still have marginally below Tendulkar and Hobbs and possibly Viv. Didn’t have a great year, not a bad one, but sucked in the BGT and mediocre in the ashes. Did score a ton in the WTC final tho.

Clearly the best of the fab 4 in terms of Test batting & a def top 10 test bat of all time, in fact probably top 5.

I’d have him 5th if he retired today.

Bradman
Hobbs
Sobers
Tendulkar
Smith

While he’s had the fortune to play in an era with a lot of tests, unlike the 3 above him, he doesn’t have a 20+ year career. I think for me at least he needs a decent few more years before he’d challenge them.

Little bit of a gap to the next blokes - btw very miniscule margins between 2, 3 and 4

Somewhere in the bottom half of the top 10 absent a late career surge

below

Tendulkar
Hobbs
Sobers
Viv
Lara

in no particular order

Best test batsman I've seen ahead of Sachin and Lara by a bit imo. Even in his decline he's been quite decent and his peak was the best sustained patch of run scoring I've seen.

Cricketer Of The Year
Not convinced that bowling attacks have been at their peak during Smith's career, and he's certainly benefitted from the fact that so many teams are diabolical when they tour Australia.

But he was sensational in the 2019 Ashes and basically earnt his team a draw in that series. Might just about be Top 20, the fact he's so painful on the eye costing him places.
