I always find the "if he could putt" he would be great argument very bizzarre, putting has always been part of the game, ball-striking is probably harder for us amateurs to do, yet it is only half the game. as Trevino said

If Woosnam, Vijay or Couples could hole short ones they'd have won many more majors. If Tom Watson's putting hadn't fallen away in about the mid-80s he could well have been close to Jack's record, still a great ball-striker.
If Crenshaw or Olazabal couldn't putt, they'd likely not even got on their respective tours, let alone win the millions they did. If Steve Webster had a short game he'd be a mega-star rather than a journeyman Euro tour player.
