Wow, amazing. I saw Eddie Pepperell saying that the course was in as good a condition as any he'd come across.

I once played a course in France on the day of a practice round for a European Tour Event - Every pin tucked behind bunkers or hanging off the corners of greens!!
We played Coolangatta/Tweed (my home course as a junior/colts player) many years ago when they were setting it up for the QLD Open and then afterwards when it had finished. The rough was so long you had to hit a shortish iron to get back out again. It was magnificent. A week and a half after it had finished it was cut right down again to the point where you could hit woods out of the rough because all the old members complained. It was such a shame.

And yet in the US that's the standard style of course (apart from a US Open). It's how Europe keep on winning the Ryder Cup in Europe, let the rough grow and make them play strategically.

I was a member of The Australian for about 20 years and it was generally immaculate

Lots of wealthy members plus the Packers tipping in about $900k per year (when that was huge money) tends to have that motivating effect on the ground staff 😂

Aussie setup never used to change much for tournaments as it would have been unplayable if they grew the rough, shaved the greens and the wind got up

The problem is, the product is still unwatchable. I barely ever turn up for a Shotgun Team Event at my Club, let alone watch it on TV. For a guy as competitive as Rahm, be interesting to see whether he still gets as fired up on the course.

This is an obscene amount of money and not hard to see why he's switched. But they still really only have 5 or 6 players of interest and until they can secure a proper TV deal, no one will be watching.

Adelaide is the only LIV event I have watched & it’s POTENTIALLY much better than traditional formats for the casual which is their target market

Shotgun starts have the entire field on the course at the same time so viewers will always get the chance to see their favourites plus there’s always golf being pla

All players are out there in the same conditions so there’s less luck in that regard

It’s also done & dusted within 5 hours while staggered starts can take 12 hours +

The graphics are terrible though and not only distracting but hard to work out while a lot of the commentary is over the top

I think you’re downplaying the quality of the field as they’re better than most regular tour events and will only improve.

Norman (whom I generally don’t have much time for) gave an interview during the event about its direction and made a lot of sense. Basically, average PGAT viewers are old, white Americans and they targeting everyone else & taking it global

I watched a couple of the first events out of curiosity through Youtube but couldn't get into it. The graphics as you say are terrible, whilst the team format is something that is hard to follow and frankly of little interest. The biggest issue I have though is that players have their money up front, there is nothing massive (other than more money) to gain from doing well in tournaments. There is no pressure of gaining that first win, keeping your card, making a cut, qualifying for play offs etc etc

I disagree about Shotgun starts making it easier to watch your favourites. Because everyone is on the course at the same time it's actually harder to see as many shots. I believe for those who actually attended the course (very few outside Aus), it meant the vast majority of groups went largely unfollowed.

The top golfer on LIV last year was Taylor Gooch - and you're telling me the fields are strong? What's also interesting is that he's been traded with Wolff to another team. Like what kind of trade is that? Just swapping the best for one of the worst, it's what happens when basically all the teams are owned by the same person.

I kind of get what Norman says on this occasion (and he generally talks drivel). Don't get me wrong, PGA Tour coverage is awful, especially at weekends when the big networks take over the broadcasting duties. There is undoubtedly a need for a change and I'm looking forward to watching the Mixed Pairs event this weekend as something different. But I just don't see the LIV format being the answer. The team stuff is ridiculous whilst a 54 hole shotgun is just not something that stands up.

It's sad to see Golf being pulled apart, and the roll back issue is something else that needs discussing too. But I suspect this is exactly what the Saudis want, and that's not something I can ever get behind.

Every LIV field next year will include Rahm, Smith, Koepka, DeChambeau, Johnson, Oosthuizen etc plus some talented young guys

That’s better than all bar a handful of non majors

Anyway, I look at LIV in the same way I look at the IPL - entertainment, not for the purists but will only get bigger

Only 2 of those (3 at a push with Koepka) are at their peak though. As a potential Major winner, I only really see Niemann as being another option from their ranks.

The PGA Tour has at least introduced Signature events this year so the Top 50 will all play at the same time at some iconic courses like Riv and Pebble. What they really need to do is get rid of some of the Florida and mid season dross and travel round the world more. There are some amazing courses elsewhere which make for great viewing, it seems like it could be such an easy win.

I don't think LIV compares with IPL. Most people have embraced T20 and whilst some of the gimmicks are a bit painful, it does feature the world's best players. LIV is short on quality and the format stinks. I'm still not convinced it will get that much bigger (certainly in terms of popularity), nor am I convinced the Saudis really care if it does.

IPL started 15 years ago while LIV has only been in existence for 2

PGA Tour only introduced those events after coming under pressure from LIV and there’s real doubts as to whether they can afford them

PGAT has been mismanaging golf for years and that’s why we have LIV

The IPL has an inbuilt adoring audience for whom it was an easy sell. It is also not funded by a questionable regime intent on sportswashing (which is a reason many won't go near it). If it's to become successful I suspect it needs McIlroy and a change of format. More people will watch Tiger hobble round a father/son comp than LIV.

I don't disagree that PGA has been mismanaging for years (not to mention the European Tour which has become it's puppet). It needs to change, but not to the extent where viewers will switch to LIV.

If that merger happens, we will see these players on tour again. If not, points to a bleak future for the PGA Tour…

Rahm has potentially made one of the greatest sporting deals in history

Massive guaranteed money & could soon be playing wherever he wants

Finau rumoured to be next

Reporter is reliable and makes sense for Finau as he’s 35 & rumoured to be in financial dispute plus he’s Rahm’s buddy
Sounds like Rahm has lined up Hatton too. Also rumoured is Jason Day.

The PGA Tour is falling apart, they should've binned Monahan long ago, now it looks too late. It's got to the point where I wouldn't be surprised to see McIlroy go '**** it' and take £600m. At least he'd be honest enough to say he's doing it for the money rather than 'growing the game'.

PGA Tour and DP Tour both start with invitation only, no cut events

Sentry is the old Tournament of Champions so no change there but DP has really lost the plot

No surprise to see Pelley failing upwards into another huge sporting job after basically trashing that tour

Got sucked into watching some American guys playing mini-golf on TikTok. Think they're on their fifth "tour" now. My main conclusion is that out of town US is made up solely of mini-golf courses and parking lots for mini-golf courses.

The Dubai thing was odd. I have no idea who Ken Weyand is, but he finished +53, which was exactly 72 shots behind Fleetwood. How did he get in the field? There was a similar character in Hawaii too, he was saved further embarrassment by the cut having shot 88 on Day 1.

Quite how McIlroy didn't win this is beyond me. A 7 on a par 3 on Friday, a 3 putt from 2 feet plus an iron off the tee into water yesterday, yet he still found himself 1 shot ahead going down the last. Cue a snap hook into more water and with Tommy birdieing it, he just had to laugh. He actually played some brilliant golf on the back 9, would've been 6 under going down the last if he'd holed that 2 footer instead of smashing it 5 feet past and missing the one coming back.
