The Gerrard/Lampard dilemma & a look at England's road to Euro 2008

The reason for Lampard not playing well for England is actually quite simple. With Chelsea he has Makelele behind him playing as a defensive midfielder and this means that Lampard can influence the game higher up the pitch and he doesn't need to worry about tracking back as much as he knows Makelele is there. When Lampard and Gerrard play together Lampard is the one who drops back and collects passes from the back 4 which is something Makelele does for Chelsea. This means that Lampard can't influence the game as much and he is not higher up the pitch with alot of freedom to pass or go for a shot. This severely limits his game as we all know he doesn't really dribble with the ball and can't run at people due to his lack of pace.If for eg Hargreaves and Lampard were in the midfield Lampard would be able to dictate play and play higher up the pitch meaning his passes would be telling and worthwile. You have to get the best out of Lamprd by playing the correct system. This is why Gerrard and Lampard will never play well together and one of them will have to be sacrificed.
yea well said, hopefully in the coming year we can see can see Lampard/Hargreaves forming a similar partnership in the mid-field because the fact is a firing Lampard can only make England better.

Paul Scholes was rubbish for England for a long time due to the idiocy of Sven playing him on the left.
word out, forced the bloke into retirement really. Would love it if he had considered to come out of retirement but ah well..

Scholes wasn't forced into retirement. He figured the best thing for his career was to play less football to prolong it.

yes thats true, but it was fairly obvious that the fact he was forced to play on the left in order to accomodate Gerrard & Lampard in the centre of the park made him make the decision to cut his international career short.

You just have to remember that Aussie's opinions on football are usually pretty average.

nah i disagree my views are a bit better than that and my point on Scholes still stands don't see what the big deal is.

But anyway sledger simply has weird issues with me & would for the longest while picks up on every little thing i say. Thought putting him on my igonore list would work but the pest lives on..

Sven, while rather stupidly playing Scholes on the left, did not force him into retirement.
okay maybe saying it '' forced him into international retirement" wasn't the best way to describe what happened to Scholes, but it did influence his decision to cut his international career short.

It probably had a slight bearing on his decision, it certainly wasn't the biggest factor though.

Realistically speaking if McClaren went now or wasn't appointed in the firstwho would have been the ideal replacement manager?

Scolari is an egotisical tool who would only be in for the money IMO wouldn't know a great deal of the Premiership and the language, at least that is one problem solved by coaching Portugal. Wenger or Ferguson, both wouldn't want to leave their clubs now and hell would freeze before one of those two coached England, especially Ferguson, a proud Scot.
