The Forumer's Ashes

Day Three

On a now extremely worn track, Australia opted for spin immediately and the move paid off. Wayne picked up his second - Oscar Wood out bat-pad - and Ardley departed in the next over against Stephen. From 83/5 Pickup and Deen steadied the ship, and with the former passing fifty, the pair took England's lead past the 300 mark. It wasn't to last, as Lewis - used for the first time in the innings - got Pickup out amidst an expensive over, and Deen fell lbw to Coco for 25. The opening quick then dismissed his opposite number Myheart first ball, again lbw, to have England falter to 135/8.

With England having lost five wickets in an hour it was to Furball's credit that he lasted long enough to stretch out the lead past 350 by the time Suifdadny trapped him in front. The tenth wicket wicket however - an absurd run-out to end the morning session - remained entirely the fault of the batsmen. England had fallen well short of an invincible target, but with the way the pitch was behaving, it seemed like 354 would be more than enough.

Force struck straight away, firing one straight through Lewis' defences to bowl him for a golden duck. Burridge didn't last much longer, falling to Myheart for 12, and once again the Australian innings was in immediate strife at 17/2. Something special was needed from Super and Monk, and after whethering the opening quicks, the pair began to look like delivering that something as the scoring went up against the change bowlers. By tea the third wicket stand had passed 100, and Australia were back in the hunt on 121/2.

Myheart got the breakthrough, dismissing Super for another of the day's lbw decisions the ball after Australia's number 3 had raised his fifty. Spark announced his arrival at the crease with a first-ball four, and the partnersip that had taken Australia so close in the second Test resumed. Monk's half century came up as the runs required slipped under 200. But once again the pair were broken up by Furball, who took a brilliant return catch to dismiss Spark for 23.

England continued to chip away as the visitors took their score past 200. Wood's first bowl of the match removed the well-set Monk and though Loblaw's counter-attacking 44 looked dangerous, he became Myheart's third wicket to another lbw. Stumps came with the score on 246/6, with 109 further runs required.

The ****er who ran me out clearly made me lose concentration. He stopped me getting an inevitable 100.

Day Four

English nerves would have been jangling as Rad Haddin and Dan Wayne took the runs required into double figures. But both were gone half an hour in as Wayne lost his offstump against Force, and then Furball got the big wicket of Haddin with Deen taking the catch. From there the writing was on the wall. Coco enjoyed his brace of boundaries, but was gone lbw to Smithington-Smythe for 11. In the next over, Stephen was run out after having faced one ball. Australia were all out for 284, and England now led the series.

England won by 70 runs
