Australia's best know cricket magazine Inside Edge actually tried that back in 2001 & they published some interesting results , apparently they calculated Frank Tyson to have been around 136kph (Andy Bichel pace) , which is interesting as everyone back then said he was teh quickest they'd ever...

Don't think it's humanly possible to be any quicker through the air than Akhtar and Lee in their pomp. Those two made the pitch appear 15 yards long at times.

Shaun Tait's fastest over:-

Brett Lee's fastest over:-

Average bowling speed= 155.57 kmph

Lee has to be the ultimate fast bowling nut though. He was hitting 145 with ease till the very end despite all the miles and injuries. Doubt anyone other than Shoaib has done that but Shoaib's action was an ugly mess by then.

Not really sure how consistent he was with that express pace. Have heard that he wasn't as consistent as Akhtar or Tait.

He was handled poorly by Waugh and Ponting. Was given the enforcer role while seniors like McGrath and Gillespie were around, but there was more to him than just that as seen from his final few years in Tests.

Probably the most polished beast of them all. Almost feels wrong to include him in a discussion of tearaways...which he undoubtedly was.

There are a lot of names, such as Mitchell Starc, Mitchell Johnson, Mohammad Sami, Fidel Edwards etc; but they belonged to an era when we knew exactly how fast they bowled, and they didn't bowl faster than the 3.
