CW Colts Season XI Awards
FC Batsman of the Year
Unfortunately, there wasn’t much to choose from. Zac Gelman showed promise in averaging 29.45 in his 7 matches, while Pooja Bharat found a niche for herself up the order, the highlight being 124*. Towns was consistent as usual, but not as prolific as previous seasons. In the end, making the most runs (777) and being the most consistent batsman throughout the season, it was Gary Nayak who took away the award. 6 half centuries and a 101* as he averaged 28.78.
OD Batsman of the Year
This was probably the toughest award to hand out, with numerous candidates. Das’ form (407 @ 31) ended up seeing him debut for the CW XI, a fine achievement. Jasotharan notched up 472 runs for the year, in typical swashbuckling fashion. Daniel Towns scored the most runs for the side, nearly breaking the 500 barrier, and can view himself extremely stiff to miss out on the award. In the end, however, the winner of this award was Tarick Weber, who earned his elevation after contributing consistently down the order, and made the most of it - scoring 427 runs at an average of 42.7, and at a good clip too.
FC Bowler of the Year
Kyle Wright displayed vintage form throughout the season, taking 74 wickets at 22.86, and pushing hard for a CW XI recall after reconsidering his impending retirement. Tarick Weber performed well in his traditional strength of FC bowling, with 47 wickets at a tick under 23. But the current holder of this award will take it home once more, and Greg Thomas’ season deserves that. 82 wickets, at 20.85, including 7 times taking five wickets in an innings, and an amazing 3 ten wicket hauls, showed exactly how destructive Thomas can be at his best.
OD Bowler of the Year
One of the easier awards to decide this year, there really was one standout candidate. Tarick Weber took 15 wickets as his OD game improved rapidly throughout the season, Gelman showed promise throughout the season, while Jack McNamara kept it tight, with his economy rate for the season ending up below 4 runs per over. Nath Patrick also contributed intermittently, displaying what made him such a sought-after player when he became a free agent. However, captain and spiritual leader Kyle Wright’s season was one to behold in OD cricket, as he led the competition in wickets with 37, at an average a touch over 16, including 4 times taking four wickets in an innings, and one 5 wicket haul. This led to his recall to the CW XI for the series vs Zimbabwe.
FC All-Rounder of the Year
Despite his contributions with ball in hand, Tarick Weber would be disappointed with his batting this year, which somewhat ruled him out of the running for this award. Zac Gelman showed a lot of promise, but once again it’s Nick Hancock taking this award home, as he managed the prestigious double of 500 runs and 50 wickets, a fine effort.
OD All-Rounder of the Year
As Hancock and Gelman continued to share matches throughout the year, neither really claimed a strong hold on their place in the side, and this is reflected in the averages. Pitt did a little bit of bowling to go with his OK batting season, but certainly not enough to qualify for the award. In the end, one candidate shone above all others, and that was Tarick Weber, with 15 wickets and 427 runs he won this award quite comfortably.
Captain’s Award
The following player has put his hand up time and time again to try and solve the seemingly never-ending problem of the FC openers’ positions, and thus far he’s been the best at fixing it. Forever enthusiastic, and playing in the right spirit, even though he was having a bit of a nightmare in OD cricket for most of the season, Stephen Burke has once more won this award, and the whole CW Colts establishment congratulates him on this achievement.
Best First-Year Player
It’s well deserved, even though he may have been the only rookie on the list. Zac Gelman has a fine first season, and we are all saddened at the CW Colts to see him leave. We wish him all the best in the future, except against the Colts, where we hope he gets nipped out early. Congratulations, Gelman, and well done.
CW Colts Player of the Year
This year we introduced a voting system to decide this award, and to those who didn’t vote, please try and change this for next season.
Once again, there were a number of fine candidates for this award, staring with Tarick Weber had a fine season in both forms of the game, and after having a slightly below par year last year has put himself back up into contention for “A” tours and the likes.
Dan Towns was, over both forms, the most consistent batsman for the side, and continued to provide leadership, and his efforts continue to be recognized throughout the CW XI community, as seem by his representation of all of us as CW PA Rep.
Greg Thomas has further shored up his place in the Test team with his performances in Season XI, and will hopefully continue to do so for a long time to come. His spearheading of the Colts attack is vital to our chances over the next few seasons.
Gary Nayak, Nick Hancock, Pooja Bharat and James Maltus-Howell were amongst all the others whom contributed to the intermittent success found throughout the season. In the end though, there can be only one winner, and that is to be…
The captain of the CW Colts, Kyle Wright. In addition to his well-documented successes in the OD arena, Wright also backed this up with a fine FC season, and his 74 wickets at such a good average is testament to this. Kyle’s activity was much increased throughout the season, he led with a wise head and thoughtfully, as well as combining this with leading through performance and example. It is no surprise at all that the Colts players have voted Kyle Wright as the best player for Season XI.
Kyle Wright.
