The CricketWeb Colts End Of Season X Awards
First Class Batsman of the Year
The competition for the winner of this award came mainly from Towns, who was a model of consistency, and Nayak, who has provided us with a great option at 3. However, the winner was a very easy pick, and with 1263 runs @ 43.55, in a bowlers competition and at the remarkable strike rate of 107.67, it's Shan Jasotharan.
First Class Bowler of the Year
This area was the greatest of strength for the Colts throughout the season, our FC attack was one to be feared. Hancock ended up averaging 20.17 for the season, while Wright notched up another 65 wickets into his ever burgeoning account. Dan Rai's economical assistance was also vital. But the winner has to be Greg Thomas, as he took the most wickets for the season by any FC bowler, 84 wickets @ 19.87, taking one wicket every 6 overs.
One Day Batsman of the Year
This was an extremely tough award to hand out. Burke and Bharat provided a great middle order for the side, while there was some shuffling at the top of the order. Jasotharan and Pitt both passed the 400 run landmark, but so did Arunava Das, who made his 426 runs at an average of 42.6, the highlight being the hundred he made in the last match of the year. His service to the Colts OD side was rewarded with captaincy against the touring England "A" side.
One Day Bowler of the Year
David Comley stormed home towards the end of the year, and captured two big hauls. He was expensive at times, as was our whole attack as we saw ourselves being plundered for a number of big scores. McKern took 13 wickets for the season, while Nick Hancock took 17, as did Jack McNamara who did so at the best average of 34.41. It was through his OD prowess that we saw him christened as the first ever CW U/19 captain.
First Class All-Rounder of the Year
Gary Nayak provided some class with the bat, and chipped in for a few wickets now and then, while Dan Rai did a great job with the ball all year, and ended up averaging on the right side of 20 with the bat. However, there was one standout candidate, who ended up with the second most wickets for the side, as chipping in with some handy 50s at important times. Thanks to these performances, Nick Hancock received a call-up to the CW "A" FC side, and he also won our FC All-Rounder of the Year award.
One Day All-Rounder of the Year
David Comley did some good work with both bat and ball, striking at a good rate down the order. Nayak got a few games towards the season and did an economical job with ball in hand, and during the small opportunities they got, Beamer Smith and Tom Bowman did a good job especially with the ball. However, once again, it's Nick Hancock who stands out, making nearly 300 runs at 33 with the bat and taking the equal most wickets for the side, and earning himself a CW XI cap in the OD arena.
Captain's Award
The winner of this award underwent a tumultuous time in his first season, as he was engaged in a tough battle to get his hands on the role that he desperately wanted, and had to watch his competitors star while he missed out on game after game, during a time when there was no grade cricket to keep the competitive juices firing. His batting average barely made it out of single figures in Season IX in both forms, yet he continued to remain active in the thread and supportive of his team-mates.
An example for everyone to follow, everyone at the CW Colts was as proud as punch to see Steven Burke turn the corner this year, and the second half of his season was a delight to watch. His fight at the top of the order gave us something that until him we were yet to find, and his middle order rescues in OD games became synonymous with the CW Colts. He was duly rewarded for all his hard work with the captaincy of the CW U/19 side against England "A".
Cricket Web Colts Player of the Year
There were a number of quality candidates for this prize.
Kyle Wright's leadership was once more exemplary, as he led the CW attack in FC cricket.
Nick Hancock bowled his heart out for us in both forms, his fast mediums running through sides on a few occassions to single handedly win us matches.
Shan Jasotharan made the most runs in both forms of the game for the Colts, including
tying with Thamba Mamesh for the most runs made by a CW player in a season, and becoming the highest ever run-scorer for the CW Colts.
However, the winner has to be the man who was voted the Most Valuable Player in the competition in all FC cricket. He took an astounding seven 5 wicket hauls this season, and 1 ten wicket haul, and kept his title as the highest wicket-taker for the CW Colts. Also, he earnt a Test CW XI cap. In doing so he became the first Colts debutant to play for the CW XI, and has set out a pathway for all of us to follow. I'd like to congratulate Greg Thomas on winning the 2nd CW Colts Player of the Year.
