the Biggest matchwinners of today

Personally, I can't think of anyone who started brilliantly and then progressed to being crap. Kambli may have been one, but he was never really crap - he was discarded by India for disciplinary reasons. His form at the time wasn't the best, but it was for such a short time that it couldn't really be called a slump. And Waqar's regression was because of injury. Not really his fault either.

^Lawrence Rowe?
Didn't really become crap, but didn't live up to the potential, or the standard set early on.

Ajit Agarkar.

All members of the AAAS may tender their traitorous resignations at my desk between 4 and 9 pm.

Waughney

International Debutant
ODI: Gilchrist. His reputation alone puts the opposition on the back foot
Test: Muralitharan. Almost everytime Sri-lanka wins a match its because of him.

I think you do Vaas a disservice, but I get your point.

I tend to think of bowlers as matchwinners than batsmen as well, to me 4,5 wickets are more important than a century. I think the biggest matchwinners are.... SK Warne, Murali and Akhtar to some extent. :D

The name M.Bevan springs to mind as a genuine match winner. 6/180 chasing 250. Need 70 off 12 overs...who else would you want to have batting? None other than Bevan. I can remember about 1 time that Bevan has not stood up to a near impossible task. I hardly even like him as a player these days, coz he used to be boring, but you have to admire him brilliance. Just go back to that benson& hedges final on new years in...96? The aussies were chasing 173, off a rain affected 43 overs. The aussies were 5/38 early when bevan entered, then soon after 6/38. Bevan put on a 26 run partnership with healy to make it 7/74, then a decent partnership with reiffel to give the aussies a sniff. Soon after, in the last over...Enter Glenn Mcgrath. Who gets a single and leaves bevan with 4 to get off one ball. He looks around, surveys the field and Whack! He steps away and slogs a four straight past the bowler giving the aussies a famous win. Bevan finishing with a careful, and extremely intelligent 78 from 85 balls with just the 6 fours. This was the start of great things for bevan who has repeated such innings on a number of occasions. Other than Bevan i would have to say Hodge.
