The Battle of the Englishmen

And NO, it is not as close as some people are making out. Boycott was the focus of the England batting for the opponents for 2 generations, Hussain was an average test players that did a decent job as captain. There is no comparison. Boycott is lightyears ahead.

Boycott gets mine purely for a SR of 53 in ODI.

In all seriousness, batting-wise Boycs was miles clear of Hussain and Hussain's captaincy while being good still got us our bottoms handed to us on a plate in two Ashes series.

**** knows who wanted Hussain on this list (hell, his not even English by birth!;) ). So Boycott gets my vote even though the guy could have had far more flattering statistics, if it was not for his sheer single mindedness.

And took us to the bottom of the food chain, with the home series lost to New Zealand.

How good was Boycott as a captain? Then it could be Hussain > Boycott captaincy wise, but Boycott >>>>>>>>> Hussain with the bat.

Boycott for me.

Mediocre at best. Yorkshire won nothing under him between 72-78 & (IIRC) he only captained England on a tour of NZ because of injury, which we drew. Tactically Boycott undoubtedly had the mind for it; tempramentally there have been few people less suited to captaincy.

It's all well and good discussing their ability with the bat, who has wickets, and captaincy. The real issue here is who is the better commentator?

Having said that, I'll vote Boycott

I dont even have to think about it - the answer is obvious.
(I dont know what people say it is close etc)

Boycott for me - though not his mum.

Boycott, Im surprised Hussain is rated this highly by anyone.
Why are you suprised? He was a decent enough batsman, an excellent back to the wall batsman. He is also hugely responsible for getting England where they are in the test rankings at the moment.

Sir Geoffrey asserts his authority with a thumping 20-2 victory.

Next battle far harder to call I'd say; a prince of India who education & empire lead to England versus the Nottinghamshire miner who was the spearhead of the most notorious bowling ploy ever devised. The artist v the artisan!

Battle of the Englishmen: Round1, Battle 3

KS Ranjitsinhji
15 tests, 989 runs @ 44.95 (2 centuries, 6 half-centuries), 1 wicket @ 39.00

vs

Harold Larwood
