He had some great talent, though his technique was flawed which showed in his mediocre records against quality pace attacks like WI/Australia/SA (though he also played some of his most stunning knocks against the Saffers, very rocks or diamonds against them apparently). Definitely one of the best of his era in terms of pure strokeplaying ability.

Well he included Shakib who also has not been banned for fixing. He was banned for failing to report corrupt approaches. There is no evidence he ever actually fixed.
Only Players who are actually banned for fixing or related corruption in international cricket have been considered

Sort of a proto-middle-order-Sehwag.

Cricket Web: All-Time Legend
Historical leaders XI:

Belisarios - best leaver in history, great opener when things are difficult
Winston Churchill - best defense in the game. Always a bit sketchy early in his innings though.
Admiral Yi - the Bradman of history. Even with his disputes with the board almost costing him his career on many occasions always found a way to win.
Julius Caesar - terrific batsman whose selfish attitude leaves him prone to being run out by his own side.
Caesar Augustus - not personally the greatest batsman but his captaincy conquered the world.
George Washington - Great all rounder. Both a batsman and bowler of great repute. Laid the groundwork for the prototypical number 6.
Charles de Gaulle - Great keeper. Keeps spirits up in the field when things aren't going well.
Hannibal - world's greatest spinner. He's so hard to pick and bowls completely unplayable balls.
Harry Chauvel - pure pace merchant. Whether it's charging across the outfield to intercept the ball or setting records for pace, Chauvel is the definitive Australian quick.
Alexander the great - does stuff with the ball that nobody else can do. Short career though.
Attila the Hun - simply unplayable on friendly decks. Underrated bowler who was known for running in all day.

My dad always told me that Azhar was a decent bowler. Period when he used to bowl was before my viewing time.

Red

The normal awards that everyone else has
Prolific plunderer of runs in the subcontinent though
Would play til the last minute too. "We shall go on to the end. We shall fight on the pitch, with the ball swinging thru the air air, we shall defend our wicket/run tally, whatever the cost may be. We shall fight on the crumbling wicket, we shall fight on the boundary ropes, we shall fight on the fields and in the dressing rooms; we shall never surrender,

I remember he got a big ton in that super hyped 98 series against Australia but on closer inspection it looks a bit downhill skiish. What a top 6 you guys had in that series though

he made a great ton out here in Adelaide on one tour too. I think maybe the 91-92 series? Just beautiful to watch.

Hung on the back foot a little more than a lot of modern players, but that first clip above illustrates Burge’s 3rd Law: if you can backfoot drive length balls from fast bowlers back down the ground; you are Invariably a very, very, very good player.

Azhar was basically VVS (hyderabadi middle order bat with the best wrists in the world, similar averages, both aesthetically almost unmatched) except without the ability to play really clutch match winning innings from dire situations.

Whatever it takes!!!
Add Rohit Sharma... Its like a mantle passed from generation to generation. Azhar to VVS, VVS to Rohit. Hopefully another one emerges soon enough.
