The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Wanted proven players in tests. Afridi isn't one. I didn't elaborate it though.

Jayasuriya is a possible spin option.

Jadeja isn't uber aggressive. Interestingly though, he has hit 50 sixes in tests, so not a bad shout.

Uber aggressive XI, among players I have seen. Watch out for a lot of strikes outside the park and lost balls.

Sanath Jayasuriya
Virender Sehwag
Viv Richards
Brian Lara
AB Devilliers
Kevin Pietersen
Adam Gilchrist
Ian Botham
Chris Cairns
Kapil Dev
Wasim Akram
I did an ODI version of it sometime back. May be this if I do it again:

Sanath Jayasuriya
Virender Sehwag
Zaheer Abbas
Viv Richards
AB de Villiers
Jos Butler +
Lance Klusener
Glenn Maxwell
Kapil Dev
Shahid Afridi
Wasim Akram

Took help from this work I did sometime back. Era adjusted SR of Jayasuriya and Sehwag beats current English opening duo. Same with Abbas vs. Symonds.

Edit: Symonds beats de Villiers but seems wrong to keep AB out.

Botham

Tate

Would be the lineup for tests as per Charles Davis's database. Weekes, Hill, Warner, McCartney, Botham all in the running too. Not sure about the spinner.

My XI is the century eleven, 1 player from each decade from 1900 to 2000s. To define a player from a particular decade, they have to have played 60% of their cricket in that period.

1. V. Trumper (1900s)
2. J. Hobbs (1910s)
3. D. Bradman (1930s)
4. D. Compton (1940s)
5. C. Walcott (1950s)
6. G. Sobers (1960s)
7. I. Khan (1980s) c
8. MW. Tate (1920s)
9. W. Akram (1990s)
10. M. Muralitharan (2000s)
11. D. Lillee (1970s)

I assume you'll have Walcott keeping?

Laker for Walcott and Gilchrist for Murali will make this stronger IMO.

Would be keen to see what the best XI would be if you had to go ascending order in terms of decade (i.e. player in 4th spot can't have played a decade earlier than player in 3rd).

Maybe Marsh or Knott at 7 (1970s)
Imran at 8 (1980s)
Akram at 9 (1990s)
Murali at 10 (2000s)
Steyn at 11 (2010s)

Possibly replace Walcott with Weekes at 5.

Lillee misses out, but he'll cope.

I would replace Trumper with Sydney Barnes from 1900s and then swap in a better opener, may be Gavaskar for a bowler. Also Tate seems to be a weak link. But looks like none of the greats qualifies for 20s. Checked Hammond, Grimmett and Suttcliffe (59.26% of his games in 20s).

That seems pretty decent. Anyone fancy doing a reverse? Descending order. Opener from the 2010s (or 2000s if you prefer skipping the 2010s) and so on...

Ignoring war-torn decades because I can't really be sure about whether players qualify for those

Fairly certain Hobbs doesn't qualify for the '10s as the winter tour of SA in 1913 was the last series he played until 1920. He went to play until 1930 so in terms of years that's about 20% of his career in that particular decade.

Batting order is a mess really, but not a lot of other options to fit within the 60% rule. Suspect it's a worse team than the other way around.

I found this eventually, after initially getting loads of references to Buddy Holly's backing band.

Lots of Indian cricketers, as one might expect. But also Watson and ABdV.

Add Bradman on piano and you have decent team actually.
