The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

Gilchrist declined a fair bit towards the end and harmed his stats in the process. Had he been picked a couple of years earlier and given the opportunity to play in his prime, he might have retired with a 50+ avg and effectively, the Bradman of wicket-keeper/batsmen.
Him averaging 50+ or under 50 really is inconsequential. It's what he did during games that should be remembered. As pure and clean hitting a batman as you'll ever see, capable of rescuing anything from #7. He could have batted anywhere in the top 6 comfortably and averaged 50ish.

Incidentally, it doesn't get brought up but Gilly was woeful against India both home and away. Take out his India stats and he retires with an average well above 50. I'm not really making any point with this, it's just a curious point.
On raw data, yeh, but in 04/05 he played a couple of absolutely clutch innings as captain that led us to our first series victory in India for decades.

Oh absolutely. It's a quirk of statistics. There was nothing to suggest he should have had a weakness against India but statistically he did.

... with Grimmett, obviously I can only go by statsguru and some accounts but while he was an excellent spinner of that time, he also had some benefits. Of bowling in a side that had Bradman in it instead of agains it, for instance.
This interests my cricket nerd imagination. Grimmett had a comparatively good record at fc level v Bradman. I think regular match ups between DGB and Grimmett with O'Reilly would have been awesome. Though the one time that happened Bradman double tonned.

I also heard from a reliable source that Grimmett averaged 3 with the ball against Bradman in the nets, getting him out once every 5 balls or so. From this we can conclude that Grimmett would have been even better performed if he got to play against Bradman.

Quality stuff. I’m not super well versed on ABdV’s career, but in general batsmen seem to perform worse whilst keeping. e.g Walcott, Sanga, Mccullum. Idk just seems more like he’d be the exception that proves the rule.

Yeah isn't AB's average with the gloves like 60? Admittedly he only did it for 15 months.

Regarding his poor average opening, IMO that had more to do with him being too young.

Late career AB was pretty much the best all round batsman I've ever seen. And he did it all kinda half heartedly. Phenomenal player.

Been watching old Cricket Fever highlights on youtube, specifically Australia v Sri Lanka 2004 and maybe he's just having a bad series or it's the way the footage has been put together but Sangakkara's keeping has been ****
