I've tried this before and Dick Spooner was a dead cert. Also need to find room for Shahid Mahboob

'Mahboob looks good from side-on.'
'Mahboob has been completely exposed today.'
'Mahboob was milked throughout the middle overs.'

BTW, what's the general consensus on how an ATG All Rounder XI will do against an ATG Specialist XI?

My squad made of the best cricketers I have actually watched in my lifetime. So here goes:

1. S. Tendulkar
2. M. Hayden
3. R. Ponting c
4. B. Lara
5. M. Yousuf
6. A. Gilchrist wk
7. S. Pollock
8. W. Akram
9. M. Muralitharan
10. W. Younis
11. G. McGrath

12th man - A. Cook
13th man - J. Kallis (depending on conditions can slot into place instead of Yousuf)
14th man - S. Warne (if there is a need for 2 spinners)
15th man - ABD (slots in if there's a need for an extended period of ODI play)

I would play Warne over Murali. It's too long of a tail otherwise, especially with Gilchrist at 6 and Pollock at 7.

In fact, from your squad I would play Kallis over Pollock as the 5th bowling option. Kallis is a much better bat and with Wasim, Waqar and McGrath you aren't going to need a fourth quick.

Keep in mind this is a team I've picked for all formats and I feel Murali was simply the better all round bowler. Warne was nowhere near as good as the little Sri Lankan master in the limited overs game and they are pretty much on par in tests. Plus, I don't think Gilly and Pollock are anywhere close to being tailenders but I see the point about Kallis...that however adds an issue with the most underrated batsman of our time, Yousuf. Where does he bat? I feel 6 would be too low for him and I really wouldn't want to move Lara down and Yousuf up.

I'm sure Hayden has the most runs by a #2 batsman comfortably.

Including the lower order top scorers still gives you a pretty good attack too.

Most runs by position XI

1. Gavaskar
2. Hayden
3. Sangakkara
4. Tendulkar
5. Chanderpaul
6. Waugh
7. Gilchrist
8. Vettori
9. Broad
10. Steyn
11. Muralitharan

You could also reasonably include Kumble as the top wicket taker at first change.

Looking at the other positions throws up a few unexpected names, though they could do with a few more jammy part timers to strengthen the middle order.

Most wickets by position XI

1. Wasim Jaffer (9)
2. Sanath Jayasuriya (6)*
3. Arthur Shrewsbury (11)**
4. Ramnaresh Sarwan (7)
5. David Allen (8)
6. Anil Kumble (3)
7. Muttiah Muralitharan (4)
8. Alfred Lyttelton+ (10)
9. Erapalli Prasanna (5)
10. Makhaya Ntini (2)
11. Glenn McGrath (1)

*actually Prasanna, but he's taken and Sanath was next.

** Technically Shresbury, being one of a handful of players to bowl as the 11th bowler in a Test but not to take a wicket, is the joint highest leading wicket taker. Ajay Ratra, Herchelle Gibbs and Graham Yallop are the others. I've selected Shrewsbury as he's a batsman who only bowling in first-class cricket were his two Test overs at 9th change, and as such can be considered a specialist in the position.

Whatever it takes!!!
What if you just go by the top 5 run scorers by batting position and top 5 wicket takers per batting position and throw in a keeper at 6?
