The ATG Teams General arguing/discussing thread

I wouldn't say anyone is too good to be a 5th, but you definitely need to have some other AR strength in the other bowlers, and pick the best bats outside of those 5. The real problem with him is that he doesn't really suit any batting position, despite being good.

Afridi might bowl 2 overs a match in that team. Playing him as what is basically a specialist bat is... Questionable.
I just think Afridi could be plenty useful in the last 4-5 overs, agree with the Flintoff analogy though.

1980s Team : I have selected Greenidge and Haynes as they had good individual records and their partnership run is a record in ODI's. Dean Jones, Viv Richards and Zaheer Abbas a Magical Middle Order. Initially chose Javed Miandad but after looking at the suggestion of @Fuller Pilch just saw the stats of Zaheer Abbas and his stirke rate was amazing compared to Javed Miandad and same goes with Ian Smith strike rate of 99 at no 8 will be great compared to jeff dujon who had poor strike rate. 6 and 7 went with Worldcup Winning Captains Imran and Kapil. Best Spinner of 80s in ODIs was Abdul Qadir and 2 best pace bowlers of 80s were Hadlee and Garner averaging 19 and 18. Its a Perfect Team. Didn't select Greg Chappell as his record in 80s was not as good compared to 70s and he never opened the innings in his entire ODI Career. Its a Very Strong Team capable of defeating other 3 teams from the future.

1990s Team : Saeed Anwar was my favourite opener of 90s but Mark Waugh was equally good and was a better fielder and better bowler so went for him. Tendulkar has to be there no question. some may argue that anwar and tendulkar can make good left and right combo but no3 Lara and no4 Andy flower are left handers so i went with 2 right hand openers. No3 Lara is the right choice. Unlike Ian Healy Andy can do good batting and did not take alec stewart as he was more of an opener. No4 Andy flower is the best choice. Most controversial inclusion was Steve waugh as he had a good record batting no5 and won the worldcup, As we already had 2 spinners so i went with steve waugh who can bowl medium pace for 3-5 overs instead of de silva. Michael Bevan and Lance Klusener has to be there. Saqlian and Warne 2 best spinners of the decade and Wasim and Donald 2 best bowlers of the decade. didn't take Waqar as Donald had better average and economy rate but its very close. Steve Waugh has too many options 8 bowlers. only little drawback is having lance klusener as 3rd bowler but 2 great spinners should be able to destroy any world class batting lineup once the ball gets old.

2000s Team : Probably the Strongest Team among the four i may be wrong. Gilchrist and Hayden best opening combo of 2000s. Hayden single handedly put Australia in 2007 Worldcup final. Ponting no3 was the best of the decade. Michael Clarke is the most controversial decision but i chose him as he also can be a good part time spinner and a proper no 4. Inner Circle with Ponting, Clarke, Yuvraj and Symonds will be a nightmare for other teams. Yuvraj and Symonds can be good lower order players who can play quickly and also they are good part time bowlers. Andrew Flintoff over Shane Watson as he played more ODIs and is a better bowler with an average of 24 in the 2000s. Pollock a good and reliable bowling allrounder. Murali and McGrath. Brett Lee over Shane Bond as he was more consistent. Michael Clarke also did well in Worldcups and Hussey couldn't do that. This was the toughest team to pickup as not including hussey and watson can make some people upset. @TheJediBrah suggestion didnot include Kallis as his batting strike rate was poor and doesnt need an extra medium pace bowler as we already have McGrath Pollock who can fullfill that work. Shane Watson was an opener for only 22 innings in 2000s so went with more experienced Hayden.

I like the players. Might be tempted to drop a bowler with Watson/Yuvraj/Symonds making up a decent 5th between them.
I agree that bowling is a bit overkill in that team but I can't really think of a suitable swap for Bond without having to rejig the side massively. Flintoff and Yuvraj are kinda hard to accommodate. Can't have those guys batting in the lower order and I don't think a better #8 would add much utility since Pollock is there already. The only suitable player I can think of is Abdul Razzaq at 8 but that marginally improves batting while making bowling a lot worse. Alternatively:

Gilchrist
Hayden
Ponting
Hussey
Symonds
Yuvraj
Watson
Flintoff
Pollock
Muralidharan
McGrath

Think the first team is a better combination.

I feel like this one should be stronger, but Watson and Flintoff weren't suited down the order. This batting lineup is a mess of good bats. Watson either opens or gets dropped IMO. Need to hoick Dhoni from the 2010s :p
