Anyway, to move on, compared to the relative strengths of each country’s first ATG XI would any country move up or down significantly if we went to 2nd or 3rd XI’s?
India would do ok on batting, bowling would take a hit - but would still do very well at home.
South Africa probably the reverse - batting takes a hit, bowling would do ok.

Bolo.

International Captain
RSA LO Xi: Amla
De Kock
B Richards
G Pollock
AB
Rice
Klusenar
Procter
S Pollock
V D Bijl
Tahir

Some issues at the top. I really can't think of a number 3. De Kock is iffy, and Amla is just fine in this context. But absolutely stupid depth in both batting and bowling. Klusener as a 6th bowler is OPed. The double punch of G Pollock/AB is something special, and having bats down to number 9/10 who can throw some wood is great. Crazy scoring rate from 4 down.

I love Steve Waugh as much as the next Aussie bloke who isn't Ian Chappell (or Mark Waugh), but no way does he make that team.

Because he's not even the next Australian I'd pick for that line-up, let alone giving him a gig over Viv Richards or Wally Hammond.

I know he was a specialist at number 5 so that might be what you're going for, but as great as he was - and he was a great player - he doesn't make that team.
He was the perfect No 5 and a good lower order player. Hammond and Viv are very good No 3 option. Waugh I believe is a better Captain and fielder too.

Yeah he's not even really a guarantee in the Aus lineup. Most wouldn't pick him in that over Bradman/Ponting/Chappell/Border.

Even if you want to go for someone who batted in the lower middle order a lot and was a good captain, Border was better.

Border struggled a bit against quality bowling in Australia. Steve Waugh was a better batsmen than Border against best bowling attacks and also has experience of facing Murali. He is a bit underrated due to some tough decisions he made as captain which was not agreed by some of the players like Warne.

The Problem in Cricket World is that some people are underrated and some are overrated to ensure that the Cricket business doesn't go down. Steve Waugh is a bit underated but definitely better than Allan Border.

That's exactly what someone on the ICC payroll would say...
This is a bit like when my political party gets accused of being funded by Gina Rinehart or the Koch brothers. We wish! Please give us Koch money.

I'd love to take ICC money to manipulate CW opinions on Steve Waugh, but alas it's not been forthcoming.

That's not what you said.

People having different opinions isn't a grand conspiracy - it's just the nature of subjective discussions. There's no financial gain to be made out of players being over- or under-rated. I'm not on the ICC payroll just because I disagree with you.
Players overate and underrate other players too based on their bias, Friendships or Political gains. Its not a conspiracy its to point out the error in the Human Judgement.
