Test dream team from each nation. 1970-2020

Engle

State Vice-Captain
As a former opener, I can say that the best opening pair is made up of a rock-solid batsman paired with an assertive one. One holds up an end while the other keeps the scoreboard ticking.

Then comes a RH / LH combination - if only to throw the pacers off their line.

If the RH batsman is the rock and the LH batsman is the attacker, that is the perfect combo. Most pacers are generally more familiar with the RH batsman, thus leaving the LH one to smack any slight indiscretions.

Competency goes without saying

Thus, Gavaskar is best paired with Greenidge, IMHO

I know Gavaskar can be a bit of a div, but he wasn't the boring accumulator of runs he's being made out to be by some here. He could play either game as the circumstances demanded. Just because he holds the record for the fewest amount of runs batting through an ODI innings (36 not out off 60 overs), he shouldn't be judged too much by that.
Barry Richards makes any dream XI for his country or a World XI for the period - except the stats guru XI.

Gavaskar had more excellent attacking innings against great pace attacks than most people realise. And no, his record against the Windies ATG bowlers wasn't quite as great as is usually made out to be by casuals but he was still probably better against them than anyone else.

Played the worst innings in odi history, failed that one time against Lillee in Australia and is a racist arsehole but hey nobody's perfect I guess.

I agree, I was mainly exaggerating to rule out Gavaskar + Boycott for being too same-y compared to Gavaskar + Smith

Yep - average of 65.45 in 27 tests vs Windies (70.20 IN the West Indies itself in 13 tests).
But if you filter to AT LEAST ONE of Holding, Garner, Roberts, Croft or Marshall playing, it drops to 49.12 in 20 tests.

Whatever it takes!!!

But averaging 49 against those guys is a pretty neat achievement by itself.

LT Vs Fred Fertang Vs Bags is gonna be the most "out of nowhere" feud in CW history.
There’s no feud. Barry Richards is a rare genius who strengthens any team. It’s not quite true to say he didn’t play “any” Tests, but if anyone decides he can’t be chosen based on stats that’s their tickle.

Have no doubt he was but actually playing matches is a bit different to 'stats.'

If anything any stats bias generally favours players who played fewer matches.
