Team of the Year 2019

International Vice-Captain
After much deliberation, I would go with the below XI

Agarwal
Latham
Labuschagne
Smith
Rahane
Watling
Jadeja
Holder
Cummins
Ishant
Shami

Ashwin, Starc, Babar and a few others unlucky to miss out.

Ishant and Shami have averaged 15 and 16 this year. I don't even remember a bad spell they had this year. Cummins has been great through out. Should make for a fantastic trio imo.

Good batting depth as well. Holder and Jadeja form the ideal bridge between the middle order and the tail.

I like that hh. Maybe Babar over Rahane?

I think Wagner deserves to be in there considering he took plenty of wickets and averaged 20 in Australia and on the flat decks in NZ.

The Indians bowled seriously well but they did play some weak opposition in WI and Bangladesh. Cummins had a great Ashes (I think 6 wickets per test or something) but wasn't great against Pakistan.

Maybe Wagner should play ahead of Ishant/Shami who I'm struggling to separate.

Bumrah was primed to be an automatic choice in this team until he was laid down by injury. Those spells in WI were insane. In the end though, others having played a lot more through the year ought to be discussed and selected more often.

Virat had a very steady year by his lofty standards and is very much in the reckoning just like many others.

Who gets the new ball? Cummins would lead the attack you'd think but he's basically the best change bowler in about 30 years. Warner generally bowls first change too.

I would probably give Holder a go with the new ball along with the other bowling option and then follow up with Cummins and Wagner.

Quality new ball bowling is so important in Test cricket. Especially with the modern standard of new ball batting (i.e. abysmal). Good bowling can have opposition regularly 50/3. Holder taking the new ball for a World XI is not ideal.

Do agree with this in principle. Holder's best performance has been when he has taken the new ball though. Averages 11 something when he has started off with the first over and 16 something when he has been a new ball bowler(small sample size admittedly). Possibly workload management has forced him to be a change bowler more often. One of the WI commentators in the recent series against India had mentioned that Holder has been at his best while bowling with the new cherry.

Whatever it takes!!!
I like hurricane's side a lot. Would still say Stokes over Holder and maybe Kohli over Rahane, and Wagner for maybe Shami. Actually, I will just let Cummins and Ishant bowl with the new ball and Wagner and Stokes bounce out the rest. Jaddu and Labu can share the spin twinning.

Why stokes over holder?

Oh yes, that's why Holder is in the top runscorers in the world this year...
Stokes has played 11 Tests to Holder's 5 - tough choice between the 2 - easier to impress over 5 Tests then 11 but that isn't exactly Holder's fault that West Indies play fewer Tests and if going solely on aggregate of runs/wickets its not much of a World XI as about half the Test playing nations will play so few Tests you'd have to be doing crazily good to be up there. Holder averages 49 with the bat to Stokes 46 this year and Holder averages 17 with the ball to Stokes 35. On that basis I'd probably just about go Holder, I think he's good enough to bat at 7 and then gives you the option of 4 seamers or 2 spinners - but a close one and probably depends on if you want a bowling or batting all-rounder.

Holder's average massively helped by a double hundred to provide some context, although I'd guess the Stokes innings at Headingley played a part in some minds. With West Indies preparing bowling friendly tracks too it perhaps helps Holders bowling but hurts his batting, the only away Test then in Afghanistan on another low scoring pitch where spin ruled.

Yeah I wanted more of a batting allrounder for that spot and so went with Stokes. Holder is great though. But I do feel overall, Stokes is the better all-round package.
