Team of the Year 2017

NZTailender

I can't believe I ate the whole thing
1. D Elgar
2. K Brathwaite
3. C Pujara
4. S Smith
5. V Kohli
6. K Williamson
7. M Rahim+
8. N Wagner (3)
9. N Lyon (4)
10. K Rabada (2)
11. J Anderson (1)

Brathwaite gets the nod as there weren't many stand outs after Elgar, so did it on away performance, of which Brathwaite scored the most runs (605), averaging 46.

3-6 pretty self explanatory.

de Kock has worked wonders in making 419 @ 32 look better than 541 @ 67.62 in 6 more innings than the Bangladeshi.

Anderson and Rabada the standout opening bowlers, while Wagner was the only seamer bowling first change or more to take more than 30 wickets and did it at tick under 25 per wicket with an eye-popping 41 sr.

Lyon the most profitable spinner by some margin, away from home taking his wickets <20. The pretenders Ashjeda couldn't get close. Only Shah took more wickets away (2) albeit for 9 runs more per wicket.

This is a tough one.

There have been some standouts and a lot of mediocre players. PLus a lot of players have had stats heightened by weak opposition in home conditions (Kohli, Jadeja).

I'd go for something like

1. Elgar (Scored big at home but also toughed it out a bit in England)
2. Amla/Rahul
3. Williamson
4. Pujara
5. Smith c
6. QDK wk
7. Ali
8. Starc
9. Hazlewood
10. Lyon
11. Rabada

Root, Kohli, Sarfraz, Jimmy, Herath and a few others could probably sneak in. Not bothered if some have it different. There have only been about 3 stand outs, Smith, Lyon and Rabada.

Rahul so underrated.

Also in terms of sheer importance and the match winning factor I'd get Tamim to be the second opener.

The period is from 21 Sept 2016 to end of 2017 (???) and I really don't get AB in the ODI side tbh. Starc in the Test side too.

Kohli captain and Ashwin's presence quite questionable. Edit: maybe Ashwin did better in the stated time period.

If Che and Kohli are both in the team why put Kohli at 3 and Che at 5?

Stokes in the ODI side a bit questionable too

Biggest surprise is the bcci not getting the spirit of cricket award for Kohli.

my favourite decision Kohli made as a captain in 2017 was when he left a straight one from SOK and got out
