Richie retired in 1996 and Dave Richardson seems excessive when you already have Andy Flower in the team.
They were six pretty good years howeverBeleg said:Richardson?

Why Tendulkar isn't an opener..Dravid said:A change I would make is adding Sachin over Sehwag. Sachin has played better In my opinion
hmm i like this team especially the idea of Anwar/Athers opening very nice combination, but i'd still pick Inzamam over Richardsonhowardj said:1990's

How does Atherton make it into any select XI? I can't beleive it. Did anyone actually watch cricket in the 90's?aussie said:hmm i like this team especially the idea of Anwar/Athers opening very nice combination,
An average is an average. He didn't play any more Tests against those teams than Dravid in the same period (another player with a similar over-all average). So it is still, in terms of averages, comparing like with like. Do you also take out Dravid's fantastic series versus Australia, sans Warne and McGrath, in 2003/04 which has inflated an otherwise ordinary record against the World Champs? I just think the idea that someone who averages 62 with the bat; 32 with the ball; and is a good 'slipper'; wouldn't get into a World XI for the decade is an absolute outrage!marc71178 said:56 & 36 when you remove Zim and Ban...
Still good, but the bowling at that level shouldn't really make a difference, and he's not the only one to average 56...
Top_Cat said:Ditto; Sheesh, that's a strong combination....... Only minor criticism (for mine); having Hadlee and Immi in the same team. I know Immi batted well towards the end there but I don't think he warrants a top-6 spot for the whole of the 80's. I would bite the bullet and (somehow!) choose between Hadlee and Imran and find another batsman like Ritchie Richardson or David Gower or even Dean Jones. Probably have Javed above AB in the order too.
The 90's team is pretty good too. Bit of a shame there's no room for Waqar. On bowling, it'd be a coin-toss between him and Wasim for me but with Wasim's batting, he'd get the nod. I'd also prefer to see Sachin at 3 as I think he's a more 'solid' choice technically.
I always had a soft spot for Atherton, I thought he battled hard against some great attacks.Goughy said:How does Atherton make it into any select XI? I can't beleive it. Did anyone actually watch cricket in the 90's?
I know stats are not everything but he averaged under 40 (38.37) during the 90's.
He also had a terrible technique to the short ball. The 'Atherton has a great technique' belief is based on a myth. A product of lazy journalism and under-analysis.
Cue the "but he had a bad back" statements.
