Correct me if Im wrong, but didnt his hundred come in a situation similar to this? Okay, the scoreline wasnt AS bad, but the Windies didnt look like they had much hope of saving it...
It was hardly a pitch that the West Indies should have collapsed on. Dwayne Smith went in and swatted wildly. If that's the sort of innings you want in a crisis, be my guest. England can have him!

EDIT: Ok maybe it was more than just wild swipes, but it certainly did involve some luck, albeit mixed with superb strokes.

Smith went out there with the "nothing to lose" mentality. The series was gone unless the West Indies won the Test, as a draw simply would not do.

Shahid Afridi and Robert Key.
Afridi yes, Robert Key I'm not so sure, he has shown he can make a score when his team is in trouble (174 v Australia 'A' Hobart 02/03 when England had to follow on) when the team were made to follow on and papers described England as hopeless.

A year ago and someone or the other might have mentioned Sehwag... Now well he has silenced his critics!!

I'd probably say Sourav Ganguly..

I wouldn't back Ganguly or Tendulkar in that situation too much either, or the likes of Samaraweera, Youhana or Jayawardene.
I agree with you when it comes to Ganguly and maybe Youhana, he does look capable of coming in these situations playing a vauable innings. Tendulkar has played some amazing back to the wall innings in his time and for me would be one of the first guys i would call. Samaraweera looks perfect for these situations he is a scrapper and can grind out some big innings if his team needs. He only played a short amount of Test Cricket and hasn't this ability like someone like Steve Waugh, but he is more then capable of it. Jayawardene at home i would be pretty confortable if he was at the crease in this situation but away from home i guess is another story.

I the guy i really wouldn't want to come is Tillernatne Dilshan, he just seems to have this attiude that he wants to hit everything out of the park. It works sometimes as his century aganist Australia shows but fails too often and he would proabably be one of the last guys i want to come in.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to see Clarke there... In his recent form :p

Mark Waugh... He wasn't that good at saving a game...
i think he was underrated in that facet of the game. this sort of thread always suits the number 5-7 more than the top order. but his effort in drawing that match at the adelaide oval, and his innings in port elizabeth, plus when he had that massive partnership with steve in the caribbean, show that while he wasn't the best at it, it wasn't exactly a weakness of his either.

meh, each to their own though, i guess.

well i he may have saved a game or two... but he wasn't one 2 count on... You can count on Dravid the save a game... but not on Mark...
