Pretty disappointing second half after we were controlling things quite well in the first stanza. As Oliver said in the post-match interview, the Hurricanes can just spark something at any stage, and there was always the lingering feeling that the Canes were going to break through.
Some desperately dumb football at times from the Highlanders, particularly with the fatties appearing in the backline at crucial times, when the ball needed to be spread wide. Couple that with amateur mistakes (kicking drop-outs over the touchline on the full, poorly directed kicks et al) and it was always going to be tough to hold out the Canes.
The visitors certainly deserved their win, and Eaton was everywhere once again, while Paku penetrated well at times. If there's one thing that annoys me about the Canes, it's the off-the-ball stuff. For example, Blair was trying to run back to the 22 to drop out, and two of the Canes were holding him back, and roughing him up a bit, for a good 4-5 seconds. It's similar to the stuff that has crept into the All Blacks through Collins and So'oialo in particular, and I don't like it (see So'oialo's tackle on Shane Williams as Dan Carter was chipping and chasing to score in the second Lions test for a prime example). Just leave it out - it wasn't going to help you win at all against a side you had the better of.
Mapasua is cutting in too much, although Brew continues to look good when he gets the ball - he just has to look a little earlier for the pass at times as he often gets isolated.
Once again, Cooper waited long enough to sub Cowan so Smylie couldn't really make an impact on the game, while Boys was perhaps brought on a little too late - although T-Pole had been a key target in the lineout.
I guess that's the season well and truly done now, in terms of post-roundrobin aspirations. Despite the talk of added firepower out wide, it's been the problem of getting the ball out to them that has proved insurmountable.
