chillRicky Ponting's poor away record against top 6 teams made me believe that he is closer to jayavaradhan.

how? Both are sufficiently overrated but Gavaskar was the more complete Batsmen.
Gavaskar's WI record is a myth. Ponting's reputation is a myth.how?
Gavaskar averages 56 VS West Indies since 76'...his away average is 42..and 62 at home.. home should also be considered as we know what Roberts, Holding and Marshall did in India.Gavaskar's WI record is a myth. Ponting's reputation is a myth.
West Indies sent their second XI to India in 1979, with all the main bowlers playing in Kerry Packer's World Series Cricket and the attack being led by Sylvester Clarke and a washed Vanburn Holder, Marshall played a couple games but was years from being a regular and was a nobody in 1979. In this series, 5 games were draws and only 1 game had a result (close Indian victory) and Gavaskar made nothing in the match where there was a result, every other match was on a slow dead road against a West Indies attack horribly ill equipped for these wickets. Gavaskar made 732 runs @ 91.50 with 4 hundreds in this series.Gavaskar averages 56 VS West Indies since 76'...his away average is 42..and 62 at home.. home should also be considered as we know what Roberts, Holding and Marshall did in India.
Martin Crowe, Graham Gooch, Greg Chappell (World Series Cricket included). Can you name a few of those batters?

when he faced Andy Roberts (1974), Michael Holding (1976) and the Quaret (1983), he made
1,243 @ 42.86 with 5 hundreds.
Good, but not better than what a lot of good batters from this era achieved against them.
Ok?76 Away Tour VS West Indies
against Roberts and peak Holding
390 runs @55.71
83 Home Tour VS West Indies
against ATG Tours of Marshall and Holding
505 runs @50.5
Considering he is a debutant in away conditions his debut series also should be considered.
Not arguing his 70+ avg VS WI, but I think he is more than what is potrayed in CW
He was only poor away vs India.Ricky Ponting's poor away record against top 5 teams made me believe that he is more closer to jayavaradhan than he is closer to gavaskar.

I’ve suspected for a while but he’s been better this time so I kept my mouth shutHi narayana![]()
There was the perception in many quarters that Sunny was somewhat of a fair weather fighter.Ok?
1974 Home Tour vs West Indies
Against Andy Roberts and Lance Gibbs
108 runs @ 27
1983 Away Tour vs West Indies
Against the Quaret
240 runs @ 30
overall, he averages 42 against the actual Windies and his 71 and 79 series show his skill in going big when the opportunity is there, but his 60+ avg against West Indies has misled many casuals and that's what I called overrated.
I guess 71 needs some applauds unlike 79, considering it was his debut at overseas.Ok?

But scoring against the ATG Marshall and Holding in 83 home tour deserves credit. There was the perception in many quarters that Sunny was somewhat of a fair weather fighter.
Holding mentions it and I recall on a post ORS mentioning that his dad had said that as well.
The dude literally only scored runs against pace on the flattest of wickets.
His contemporary peer rating wasn't nearly as high as it represented today.
An ATG, borderline top 10 batsman for sure but there's a reason why Barry was seen to be his better, at least in the 70's and he was about the equal of Greenidge in the 80's.
