Sutcliffe played in the absolute worst dead pitch era of test cricket.

He also played his entire career where you couldn't be given out LBW if the ball pitched outside of the off stump.

His scoring rate, considering such conditions and that the older gentleman at the other end going at a quicker clip, is almost disqualifying.

Gavaskar is a better opener and a borderline top 10 batsman.
But uncovered pitches were bowling friendly,? So how he played during batting friendly era,!?

Johan

International Captain
Gavaskar's debut series performance against WI does get downplayed at times citing weak opposition attack.

The reality is that India would have lost both the 4th and 5th tests if he hadn't scored heavily in them.

He played an unbeaten match saving hundred in the last innings of the 4th test, with only tail enders left in the hut before the match ended.

In the 5th test, facing a huge first innings lead, he scored a double hundred in the second innings. WI escaped with a draw on the last day but it would have been an easy win for them if Gavaskar had merely scored a hundred.

By the look of it, this would have been a thrilling series to follow if a lot of us were around then.
objectively, it should not be written off.

but when his record against West Indies is discussed, I think it's safe to write this off as uber impressive.
