Substitute fielders in tests

To all those saying the Aussies hadn't said anything about it before...

Ponting, who later apologised for his outburst, said Australia had formally raised the substitute issue with match referees three times this tour and was disappointed that the umpires were not monitoring the matter more closely. "There's been lots of talk about policing it and patrolling it," he said, "but nothing's happened so far."

I love it when the whinging crybaby convicts go on about "it's not in the spirit of the game". This from the team that appeals, the umpire then shakes his head and says not out, so then they appeal again for another 5-10 seconds. Then there's Ponting and Warne harassing the umpire if they didn't get a decision go their way, or the ranting from Ponting after that run-out. And that's only from this series.

It only seems crucial because he's such a good captain that more often than not, he comes back onto the ground changes something... and takes a wicket straight away.
The question that I'm posing is whether he changes something, or if Duncan does?

note Australia more double the tests per dismissal than the next closest, and more than 4 times England.

And name me one person who wouldn't take advantage of a law if you are that desparate to win? If it is there why not take advantage of it? England are perfectly in their rights to to do this (without sounding like an expert but a 7 minute break won't do that much?) and so would Australia if they choose this angel.

It's a myth that all the england bowlers go off for 7 minutes at a time anyway. Usually it's 3-4. At one time in the last test Hoggard popped off the over before he was supposed to be bowling a new new ball spell and was back in time for the next over - totally consistent with going to the toilet. If they were really pushing the law why stop at 8 minutes? If they're at the end of a spell they usually won't be required to bowl for a fair bit anyway.

May I remember the Aussies that Ponting did the same during the ODI's?
Not to anything like the degree England did. The problem is not that the players go off for a few minutes and get replaced with a sub, which is outside the laws but something every team does by way of a playing agreement of sorts, but the way England keep a specialist sub on the field practically all the time and rotate players off to have a rubdown before a spell or so Vaughan can chat to Duncan or whatever. This is why it's a spirit of the game issue, because a leniency with the laws which is extended to all teams is being abused.

There's absolutely no evidence that takes place.

Don't stop FaaipDeOiad now - he's on a roll.

Next he'll be telling us how Australian cricket has always been played this way.

'Spirit of the Game'? Don't make me laugh. That term was only pulled out of the air because they couldn't think of a suitable sledge with enough 'f' words in it.

I'm not suggesting there is any evidence, but that is the complaint isn't it? I don't know how much of it is actually true any more than anyone else does, but that's what the Australian team is complaining about.

Probably alongside the sentiment "I wish we'd thought of that"... closely followed by "Oh, yes. We did."

Strange how the strident views of DK Lillee have been absent from the media in the past week.

I can't work out how an 8 minute break including a couple of minutes to get off and a couple to get back can provide any sort of rub down or warm up benefit.
