Astronauts vs TMO, Schmaltzberg vs GG CC and WCC vs FHK the games to watch IMO.
So two of those games were the closest of the round, while one was incredibly onesided (but still fun to watch IMO
)
The two Dynamos teams pull off successful runchases against their SCC1-managed counterparts. The Schmaltzberg win was much more dramatic, with the lower-ranked and lower-rated side pulling off a final ball, final wicket win. Shanuka Kurusumuttu's brilliant century was the bedrock for the chase, with Ndlovu holding his nerve to hit the winning runs. Shout out to Tawana Wessel for 3 wickets and being part of a match-winning 30 run 9th wicket partnership. The Morporks meanwhile complete a more comfortable chase to remain the only unbeaten team in the CWC3. Professional all-round performance from the group stage leaders.
The Honest Hunks put in a spirited showing against the defending CWC champs, but it wasn't enough. They battled hard to get 122 in tough conditions, and then made ZCC really work for it in the chase. We got there with only 4 wickets and 7.3 overs to spare. Good to see Chester and Bashir in the wickets, while Garner continues to churn out valuable runs. Chunky Kuttikkad nabs 3 wickets and keeper/opener Dipesh Mehra scores a composed 54*, so some bright spots for HH as well.
TMO nearly pull off an upset against the in-form Astronauts, though going by the ratings they probably should have won this. Vilojen finally gets a crack up the order and top scores with 45 in a match where no other batter crossed 30, but TMO left runs out there as they were bowled out inside 32 overs. The Astronauts lost their 7th wicket still needing 18 to win, but got 8 of those runs through fielding errors. Lots of areas for TMO to work on moving forward, while the Astronauts continue their ascent up the CW rankings.
FHK dealt out an incredible thrashing in foreign conditions that they should be utterly unsuited for, which begs the question where this form has been in league cricket. Agnes Chow (91 off 95) and Tong Ying-kit (50 off 129) both hit career highest scores as part of a 173 run, 35-over long opening partnership. Must be an FHK record of some sort. In conditions where the new ball would be key, WCC didn't take a wicket till the 36th over, and FHK piled on 200 without much from Chung (7) and Law (3 ball duck). Nice to see Agnes nearly ton up, and Tiffany hit 2 sixes in the 4 balls she faced. In the chase, Joshua Wong showed off the improvements that the coaching staff have been crooning about, taking 6/15 with some hostile pace bowling. WCC were reduced to 21/4 and never recovered from there. Stunning performance.
And last but not least Jura CC continued their fine form at the top of the table with a comfortable 68 run win away at ataraXIa CG. You would have expected a closer game, given the ratings and the home team winning the toss, but JCC's strong batting lineup keeps on delivering. Skipper Simon Brooks (62 off 43) was the star this time around, taking JCC from 114/3 in 22.3 overs to 205/6 in 34.4. It was always going to be tricky chasing a steep score, even in relatively good batting conditions, and Sajid Sajid's (no that's not a typo) 2 wickets in the 10th over set the tone for the rest of the innings.
Best Innings of the Round - Easily
Shanuka Kurusumuttu (DynS). Special mentions to
Simon Brooks (JCC) and
Agnes Chow (FHK)
Best Spell of the Round -
Joshua Wong (FHK), with honorable mentions to
Fred Clarke (DynM),
Tim Chester (ZCC) and
Taufeeq Bashir (also ZCC)
No changes in the Top 5 after this week, tho GG CC's hold on the position has weakened with that narrow loss. The Ashgrove Astronauts have broken into the top 6, but only 4 points separates them and Schmaltzberg in 10th place. Competition really heating up in the middle of the pack, we're in for an exciting season.
It's Main Team vs Affiliates next weekend, with Morpork playing Schmaltzberg and FHK playing ZCC. The latter of those games could see some movement in the Top 4. Should be exciting. The remaining 4 games should be straightforward wins for the home teams, except when ataraXIa pay a visit to The Merry Arboreal CG - that could be a win for the visitors.
