Stokes injured in the Hundred. Who steps up to be England captain ?

FBU

International Debutant
Got a feeling that Stokes will be in the England dressing rooms for the three Tests and not sitting at home.

I hadn't got as far as checking Leach's tests. It's possible that he played as well as another spinner at some point.
Leach played one match with Moeen Ali against Ireland at Lord's in 2019. They bowled seven overs between them.

Two spinners at home was fairly normal for England until the 1990s. You mentioned Croft and Giles in 1998. There were five other examples during that decade. None brought victory. Such and Tufnell teamed up three times, Such and Emburey once, and Croft and Salisbury once.

All instances since have been referenced in the thread. There have been none since 2019.

Here's an example from 1998, with Croft and Giles both playing.
Not especially successful.

More recently, Swann and Panesar both played at Cardiff in 2009.
Also not hugely successful.

This was more like it; Moeen and Dawson against SA at Lord's in 2017

And again in the same series.

Moeen and Rashid for two of the tests against India in 2018
At Southampton
And at The Oval
Cheers. Great info

Liam Dawson got a home summer alongside Mo at one point I think, vs South Africa I want to say.

Edit: yep looking it up, was 2017. Mo and Rashid also played together, the following home summer vs India.
I would have really liked them to have continued with the Moeen and Dawson combo. Moeen with the ball used as a partnership breaker and in the 3rd/4th innings where he could be a match winner. Dawson doing the hold up an end role. Both bring plenty in other areas of the game too.

Thanks to the allrounders available at the time and JB keeping and batting at 5, England could have gone with the Moeen /Dawson combo, and still easily have 4 quicks in the side.
