Mohammed Yousuf had better peak than Sachin in mid 2000s yet nobody compare with him.Yes I do think few years ago Smith when had better average is better than Sachin (if he bring his form back and play similar fashion for 3-4 years he will be above Sachin) but peak means nothing if you are inconsistent
Don't bring in a disingenuous comparison. Yousuf's crazy peak was basically one year and his record is very ftb.

There are other ATGs that are considered candidates for the GOAT after bradman on the strength of their peak period. Prime example being Viv Richards, and I don't think Smith is any different.

Particularly since he's actually had a reasonably graceful decline before this year where even after his peak 2014-2019 period he was putting up solid numbers. It's a huge stretch to call Smith an inconsistent batsman. He's just a great batsman in decline .

I do find it a bit weird to say Sachin had a peak of 92-11 considering he had that whole slump for multiple years in the middle of that.

It would be like if Kohli suddenly went on a huge tear for 5 years and people started calling his peak from 2015 onwards.
Yeah in actuality Sachin has two separate very long peaks either side of his tennis elbow issues. Which in itself is pretty awesome.

Almost more impressive imo to have a second peak. Intuitively feels that much harder to return to that similar level of play after an extended period of downtime.

drop your top 15 rn
Bradman
Hobbs
Tendulkar
Sobers
Hammond
Lara
Smith
Sutcliffe
Hutton
Gavaskar
Chappell
Kallis
Barrington
Sangakkara
Richards

Top 4 I’m set on, 5-7 could change depending on the day. Sutcliffe and Hutton I have as dead even so I’ll go with my preference. I could also be easily convinced to swap around Gavaskar and Chappell, or Barrington and Sanga.

Ponting just misses out.

If I had to put them in tiers it would probably be 1, 2-4, 5-7, 8-11, 12-16

knew you had Hammond high but didn't knew you had him #5 all time high
I mean I have him in my XI in my signature, he gets in over Lara and Smith due to his secondary and tertiary skills, but another day I might have him 7th.

I would not call it a peak but more of a sustained brilliance.

Slump for multiple years? In those 20 years, he was bad like 3-4 years and he didn’t play much Tests in 1-2 years.
