Smith should consider it an honor that he gets compared to Sachin. Anything more is asking too much.
Even sachin vs Kohli shouldn't be fair comparison because the amount of highways he got and 27 AVG across 5 years , how did bcci let him play till 2013 , it is still a mystery and the same highway sachin fan's wants Kohli to retire.
Insane level of hypocrisy.

Sachin had a second peak from 2008 to early 2011. Did Kohli? No because his technique isn't adaptable.

And Sachin at least has the excuse of dealing with injuries for his dip in for 2003 to 2006. Kohli has no excuse, not even age.

people wanted Sachin to retire in 2006, Greg Chappel told him he's finished and Lara is better, the difference between Kohli and Sachin is...adaptation.

Peak?
Old Kallis averaged 57 in that period,
Check the number of batsman average 50+ in that period.

2010-Present : Smith

Yes we have had other legends like Sutcliffe, Hammond, Hutton, Barrington, Chappell, Gavaskar, Lara, Ponting, Sanga, Kallis etc but these 6 were best batsmen of their eras

Ok but Tendulkar also did well and I thought we are comparing him to Kohli? Point being all bats have dips in form but Tendulkar managed to rise again to no.1 again in the world by early 2011.

Kohli has just declined and declined. Clear difference yes?

If you are going to be that particular about Gooch Lara Tendulkar Amla etc then do the same for previous era players as well

It's all over the place. By narrowing down the years it just makes it so incredibly messy (and wrong)

Lara 2002-2006? Ponting was averaging in the 70s then.

At least when someone arbitrarily says a decade or two, there is a clear argument to be made. But if you're looking at who is the best batsman on any given year then it changes all the time. Since the year 2000 there are probably at least a dozen different players that would be listed.

I hate Ponting, how is that not known?
