just a quick look after 1/3 of the season......

Canterbury lead the comp;
Papps & Fulton lead the runs with both having 2 tons & both averaging in the 50s;
Papps the top individual score of 192 & the only player to break 400 runs so far;
Nevin & Sinclair top the averages in the 80s with 5 & 4 innings respectively;

Wiseman the top wicket taker with 19, followed by Scott with 15, then Sulzberger, Franklin & C Martin (subject of the 'whatever happened to' thread) with 14 - 2 spinners & 2 L arm seamers in the top 5!

Wilson still on 12 & 2x5 wicket bags having missed the last 2 rounds.........

Papps has a straight, set-hinged backlift and shuffles across his stumps as the bowler hits the crease, similar to a Matthew Bell or Andrew Jones. He wasn't what I'd call stylish, but it was good to see a young Canterbury prude succeed against an attack still expecting pitch assistance and slutty batsmanship. "Mummy, don't these trundlers realise I've been on flat wickets down at the Academy since October?" and so on.

I kind of got Papps right!

He had more strokes in him though, and a justified ODI and test debut after I wrote this is testament to that. No doubt he'll get plenty of short stuff in the tests with his forward lean and sometimes awkward hook shot, but he has every chance of being NZ's most important addition since Bond.

My main reason for bumping this thread up is because of the final today, featuring the same provinces, similar players, at the same venue. Being top qualifier, Wellington have the home advantage and only need to avoid outright defeat after 4 days to take the title.

Just as an aside, perhaps Wellington's form player of late Mark Gillespie was my primary school's hero. As smaller kids we all thought he'd play for NZ one day, but more recent years suggest this might be the highest stage he'll reach.

I think Wellington have the better bowling attack, while Canterbury have the superior batting lineup.

Harris is playing a brilliant innings as we speak...Canterbury are now 74/6 with Harris on 53* off just 56 balls.

If Ellis & the rest of the tail can hang in there, Harris could get Canterbury to a decent total.

I know he's in great form, but Harry's innings is making me wonder what will actually be a decent total.

Lately the par score at the Basin has been pretty high, and with Wellington groundsmen I can hardly imagine this one being more of a 'result' pitch.

What I really want to know is how much swing or seam movement was on offer in the early stages.

If there was alot, then obviously the batsmen will struggle but if it was minimal then thats not a good sign at all with a number of Black Caps test players in that team...and potential NZ players too.

Problem solved I think. After sitting around reading for so long my uncle might whip me at his home course for once tonight though.

Bryan and Ron are saying this track has done virtually nothing, which as Tim said is a bit of a concern with our better players trying to get into the test mode for the next 3 months or so (barring the 3 OD's with Sri Lanka 'A'). My 50/1 odds on Harry playing another test may be shortening as we speak!

Seems like our domestic bowlers have the same problems as our international bowlers. Here's a hint- the top order batsman are actually BETTER than the lower order batsman guys.

I'm a little bemused at the lack of Cricinfo coverage - it does seem to be getting more and more random what games they cover!

I don't know what happened between NZ cricket & Cricinfo...there is absolutely no FC or OD cricket from NZ on Cricinfo now & they don't even seem to be covering tour matches v FC teams either.

NZ Cricket seem to be happy to do the coverage at their own website.

Cricinfo decided not to cover State games this year so NZ Cricket split with them.

Good on NZ Cricket for doing so.

So it looks like Wellington should win this? They only need a draw.

Yes Mingster, but we are Wellington remember.

It's not like the weather is going to help them by the look of the forecast, so unless they want to spend a nervous day or so stonewalling they better hope the long batting order gets them a 150 lead or so. Papps and co. won't fail twice you wouldn't think.

Hmm, James Franklin 41*. To get back into the Black Caps, it seems like he's now considering the Scott Styris school of medium-pacers who bat turned batsman who bowl medium-pace.

Why can't any Kiwis specialise! Perhaps only Fleming couldn't have a decent game against his clone...

Canterbury 174 ahead with a day to play, although knowing Wellington this could still be quite interesting.

In the future I think they have to make the SC final over 5 days. A side stacking their line-up with batsman and giving openers singles to cover-sweepers is a pretty cynical way to end a competition.
