I suppose Vaas' exclusion is questionable, but otherwise the team seems to be quite strong.
Nah, Randiv is a very important cog in that wheel. He's been the best ODI spinner, to bat at #7 ahead of Perera and Kulasekara in a crisis situation, and to take that blinder in the field. . His replacements are just not capable enough to get a 50(70) balls or to take that blinder when it is needed.

Kapugedara has been termed Crapugedara in SL forums, because he has been the worst ODI batsman ever, even Ashraful looks better than him. Other questionable inclusion is Chamara Silva. So we see the same old faces and expect same old failures too.

The XV should have been: Sangakkara, Jayawardane, Dilshan, Tharanga, Samaraweera, Chandimal, Mathews, Perera, Vaas, Kulasekara, Malinga, Murali, Randiv, Fernando and Mendis.

The playing XI would be: Dilshan, Jayawardane, Sangakkara, Samaraweera, Chandimal, Mathews, Perera, Randiv / Vaas, Kulasekara, Malinga, Murali

We'll get found out against good teams. Mathews' fitness problems will create more brittleness in that middle order.

He's not played an ODI in almost 18 months - would suspect it would be more questionable for him to be picked.
He was the most valuable player in English T20 circuit last year. And in the Premier league has been bowling well. In last semi final, where he was bowling tandem with Kulasekara it was evident that Vaas was in top form. Kulasekara is our best ODI bowler, but Vaas was much pacier, swung it more and was more aggressive too in the approach and got wickets as well. He was simply the best pace bowler in the Premier league with ER of 3.0. And he did score some runs as well.

Why isn't Randiv or Vaas in the side?
only the select suckers know that. They'll come with some lame excuses in next few days. Aravinda has been a great player, but now he's showing he's a ****** when it comes to selection.

SL batting is not the best out there. Infact, SAF, IND, AUS have better batting line ups. SL's plan is to bat first and defend what ever. Vaas, Kulasekara, Malinga, Murali and Randiv would have formed the best bowling core of the tournament and it's strength is further enhanced by two batting all rounders who are averaging sub 27 with the ball too. Now, SL has basically disrupted that core and SL will struggle to deliver 50 quality overs. Now the bowling line up will look lime Malinga, Kulasekara, Perera, Mathews, Murali and Herath, which doesn't sound right. Herath might have to give way to Fernando to provide enough fire power for SL.

The 15-man squad has been picked. Vaas and Jayasuria left out. Mendis and Herath preferred to Randiv.

Sri Lanka name 2011 ICC Cricket World Cup squad | Sri Lanka Cricket

Kumar Sangakkara (captain), Mahela Jayawardene (vice-captain), Tillakaratne Dilshan, Upul Tharanga, Thilan Samaraweera, Chamara Silva, Chamara Kapugedera, Angelo Mathews, Thisara Perera, Nuwan Kulasekara, Lasith Malinga, Dilhara Fernando, Muttiah Muralitharan, Ajantha Mendis, Rangana Herath.

A very strong side. I still really rate Mendis, the top four and Murali are excellent and there's balance there with Matthews and Perera.

Shame there's no room for Chandimal.
And with that we can safely say that Sri Lanka have no chance in hell at winning this world cup. Randiv, our best ODI spinner hasn't been picked in the final 15. Kapu as usual has no business being in there. Chandimal missing out as well here. Dreadful job by the selecters and will definitely cost us the cup. Such a pity, if our best 11 played we may have had a great chance this year.

SL select suckers getting a rude shock. Basnahira vs Wayamba in Provincial tournement

Herath 9-0-38-2, Mendis 9-0-30-0, and Senanayke 9-0-37-3 and took out Dilshan on 58. Yet the latter wasn't good enough to make the first 30 players.

This squad is gonna struggle to make the semi's IMO.. Pathetic! Chandimal should be an automatic pick, far ahead of Chamara Silva who is just deadweight!

Would've had Chandimal in for Krapugedera personally. Randiv in for Herath. Vaas in for someone - either Fernando or Silva.

Vaas 8-1-13-4 in latest provincial tournament and according to reports just looked deadly and looked as a man possessed. Some sharp, incisive short stuff also bowled by him on the placid dead SSC track. He's definietly sending selectors a message, more or less showing the middle finger.

Chandimal has been the top scorer of Provincial OD tournement up to now. Randiv looks like lost his heart. But Senanayake is going exceedingly well taking out the top performers of the opposition.

We are going to get ass raped on Indian tracks. Mathews' fitness problems is a major worry too. Kulasekara, Vaas, Malinga, Perera and Murali should have been SL's bowling core with Dilshan and Mathews to supoort.

I would rate this team to win against anyone at home/Bangladesh. But in India it might be a different story. Things even out if SL are playing in India. Otherwise they look deadly specially in the bowling line-up.

Looks like the Sri Lankan selectors have missed a trick by not picking Chaminda Vaas.

Vaas 8-1-13-2 in the SF of the Provincial games and now 9-1-35-1 in the final.

Kulsekara 4.1-0-30-0 ATM. Vaas has done better than Kulasekara this time around.

Saw this rumor doing its rounds.
Pathetic if true, SL has a lot of tests finally comming its way and he should look to play them.8-)

To be fair, it could be a durability issue. Sri Lanka have played so few Tests of late and he's still struggled to manage the workload, regularly missing matches - how do you expect him to shoulder with even more Tests close together?

Personally I'd rather him play one out of every four Tests and never play a limited overs game again than play every T20I and ODI and retire from Tests, but obviously there's a lot more money in it for him in the latter scenario so I don't begrudge him doing it. Same with McCullum not keeping in Tests anymore; it's a shame but you can't blame him.

I think test cricket is a bit more of a physical strain on him than limited overs cricket. Its a pity though as we really need him playing in all formats ideally.
