Squadron Leader William John Edrich, DFC

the big bambino

International Captain
One of the few survivors to emerge from the last chance saloon. And he was only there because of Hammond's favour. Or the fact Hugh Bartlett cut in on Hammond's girl, if the story is to be believed. A great batsman, but the most remarkable comment on his cricket came, again, from Hammond who rated Edrich's bowling amongst the fastest he'd seen. Not good enough to lead an attack he'd nonetheless be a surprise for batsmen who'd hoped to be facing something more gentle at 3rd or 4th change.

In three days time, on March 10th, it will be 80 years to the day that Edrich hit his debut Test century, 219 against South Africa in the timeless, or should I say endless Test.
