South African Domestic Off-Season 2015

Thought I was due to start this and the new quota rules are clearly the major issue and it may see South African cricket suffer as it won't be great for the strength of our cricket and there will be quality white cricketers leaving the country or not getting opportunities. Key older white senior players will either be pushed out or will now look be looked at as stopping a young white cricketer from getting a chance as only 5 are allowed to play. The SA u19s are at an all-time low. Never have I seen an SA u19 side be trounced in a series but now it is 2-in-a-row in England and Bangladesh.

With the recent 'A' squads announced I can't say I'm too excited with the batting besides the one's in the SA set-up and Theunis de Bruyn. When I look at the SA Academy I can't say I am very excited either. I liked what I saw of Markram in the u19 WC but his Titans chances just seem to get further and further away.

Besides the Faf/Prince/Petersen all the senior core batsmen over recent years broke through young & made names for themselves domestically (Smith, Gibbs, Kallis, de Villiers, Amla). Think in the current batch you can say the same about Elgar, de Kock, Rossouw, van Zyl, Miller. To a lesser extent R. Hendricks & Bavuma. Just Theunis de Bruyn is doing it now.

You can't say the same about Cloete, Ramela, Zondo, Chetty, Delport. Very average from what I have seen from SA for years. Even in the SA Academy with Markram, White, Sincuba, Rosier, Fortuin

It does seem to be a world wide phenomenon though. Quality, special young batsman seem to be rare.

I think where we can get away with this in the future is if they can bat de Kock 6 & all-rounders like Calvin Savage, Andile Phehlukwayo & Dayyaan Galiem fulfill their potential. Believe they can certainly score 100s having seen them & have everything going for them as opposed to many of the young batsmen. Suppose they trying to find out more about David Wiese now after some hard yards on the domestic scene.

Take out de Villiers, Duminy, Amla, du Plessis still got something like :

Reserve batsman: Guys like de Bruyn & maybe Markram down the line.

They also will continue to work with Vernon Philander, Wayne Parnell & Chris Morris with their batting, even talk of Kagiso Rabada being able to contribute with the bat. Also giving McLaren another shot and probably last one at the age of 32. If succeeds great, if not a bridge to a gap possibly.

With the spinners I will be very surprised if Phangiso isn't found out. There certainly is competition.

Pace-attack will be exciting over the years. We do lack left-arm quicks though which if bowled well can be really useful to any attack. We only seem to have Parnell & Beuran Hednricks.

Age & physical well-being/endurance play an important role. How long can the first string last. Think if we go with the future & say the two left-armers find their mojo, 5 years down the line we could be looking at Parnell, B.Hendricks [both have so much to prove still & Parnell's case frustratingly so], Rabada & Daryn Dupavillon (who I rate with Rabada as the most exciting strike-bowlers) + hopefully the 3 young all-rounders come through. Would just need a successful spinner from above to balance things out.

That hopefully is the future for SA cricket there.

CRICKET SOUTH AFRICA (CSA) will be holding a specialist spin bowling camp next week at the Powerade Centre of Excellence in Pretoria.

“This annual camp has particular significance this year,” commented Vinnie Barnes, CSA High Performance Manager. “If one looks at our international fixture list for the second half of the year, we have the Castle Lager Proteas playing away Test Series in both Bangladesh and India while South Africa A will be playing both four-day unofficial Tests and a triangular one-day series in India.

“Spin bowling obviously plays an important part on the sub-continent so it is important that we prepare players properly, particularly those who have little or no experience of playing in that part of the world.

“The camp will also be attended by some of our less experienced batsmen who will be representing these various squads. Some of our Proteas batsmen have also asked to attend in preparation for the tour of Bangladesh.

“Our under-19 squad struggled during their recent tour to Bangladesh where they will be defending their ICC World title next year so we are also involving players at this level.”

Got to be a massive doubt. He has just floated along the senior scene for sometime now & seems content. He is massively overweight & has let himself down. Playing in Holland this off-season.

JJ Smuts, R.Hendricks, Rossouw, Pienaar, Vallie, Parnell all having better senior careers than him from same SA u19 side.

The positive I suppose is that he is young enough to make a change. Too many nothing scores & never kicking on has been an issue, he goes down to provincial level and is then too good.

Cobras include 21-year old Moreki in strong Cobras-squad for 2015/2016-season

Same names, same squad, same champions, but there will be a new vigour to reclaim lost ground and reinstate themselves as Sunfoil Series titleholders after relinquishing the four-day domestic title to the bizhub Highveld Lions, said Nabeal Dien, chief executive officer of the Cape Cobras, about the new Cape Cobras squad that has just been released.

The one addition to the present professional squad for the new season is the 21-year old former South African u.19-player Tshepo Moreki, who captured 22 wickets at an average of 27.81 for KwaZuly-Natal in the Sunfoil Cup Three-day competition in 2014/2015.

The ‘usual suspects’ who were part of the squad that won the Ram Slam T20 Challenge and featured as finalist in the Momentum One Day Cup Competition last season, were retained.

Dien was up-beat about the possibility that the left-arm swing bowler Beuran Hendricks will return to form after recovering from a potentially career-threatening back ailment.

He also believed the off-spinner Dane Piedt would continue his upward curve after returning from surgery midway through the 2014/2015-season.

The greatest challenges for the Cobras would be to find the perfect balance between bat and ball in the 2015/2016-season and to continue their more dominant performances with the bat which saw them finish strongly at the back-end of last season.

The three premier fast bowlers, Hendricks, Rory Kleinveldt and Dane Paterson, will carry a heavy load and will be challenged to capture the majority of the 20 wickets per game needed to win Sunfoil Series matches.

Hendricks captured 28 wickets in the Ram Slam T20 Challenge in 2013/2014, but was not available for the Cobras last season due to injury.

In his absence, Ferisco Adams was simply sensational, while George Linde also excelled as left-arm spinner in the domestic T20-campaign

The left-arm swing bowler Mpilo Njoloza is not currently a member of the squad, but the fast-evolving player could challenge the incumbents if he improves his fitness and conditioning and retains his impressive strike-rate.

Several members of the Cobras squad will form part of the winter high performance program starting on 1st June.

Only Moreki (national academy commitments), Keegan Petersen (set for the United Kingdom in August), Rory Kleinveldt and Richard Levi (who are representing Northampton in the English county series) will miss out.

Not looking to bad re: spinners

The future of spin bowling in South Africa is bright according to former Proteas left-arm spinner Paul Adams.

“We’ve got a young group of guys. Keshav Maharaj in the four-day series was great this last season. In T20 cricket George Linde was the top wicket-taker. Eddie Leie has also been in great form in the Momentum Cup and as well in four-day cricket,” said Adams on Thursday.

“It’s just up to one guy to put the most consistent performances in. There’s a lot of internal competition amongst them which is always very healthy.”

Adams was speaking at the Centre of Excellence in Pretoria where Cricket SA were holding a spin bowling camp for Under-19 players, SA ‘A’ players, and some Proteas squad members. The Proteas next head off to Bangladesh for a month-long tour including two Tests starting in July. The SA ‘A’ side, meanwhile, will tour India in July and August.

“We’ve got quite a young crop of spinners in our system. It’s a great opportunity for them to grab that spot with two sub-continent tours. Some of them haven’t played there, so it will be a new experience from which they learn.”

Adams was part of the Proteas team on a tour to Bangladesh in 2003 where South Africa whitewashed the hosts in a two-Test series. Adams was instrumental in helping his side to the win in the first Test where he returned the best figures of his career when he took 10/106 in the match, with a five-wicket haul in each innings.

Understandably, Adams has a good knowledge of the conditions in Bangladesh.

“Generally it’s the pace you bowl not the lengths like in our (SA) conditions. On those tracks you can bowl really quick, and things happen off the surface. Here, if you bowl quick it’s nice and easy to hit. There you can bowl into the wicket and get some purchase. It mustn’t be a shock to the system; the bowlers have to be prepared to run in and bowl quick and get the ball to react. It is 40 degrees out there as well, so it can be tough.”

On Dane Piedt, 25, who is returning to full fitness from a horror shoulder injury to be included in the SA ‘A’ side, Adams said his young player would still need time to return to form.

On his Test debut, Piedt claimed match figures of 8/152 against Zimbabwe, in Harare, in August last year. Just over a month later, Piedt injured his shoulder which required surgery to repair serious damage to the joint and cartilage.

“He’s got some time still to put in, it’s a shoulder injury and not just a case of the surgeon saying he’s fine.

“When it comes to top flight sport your whole body needs to be in top shape. There has to be no doubt in his head, generally it takes a bit of time. I reckon it takes a year or so to get back to where you are comfortable. We’ll look to nurture him, he’s young. We’ll dedicate a lot of time to getting him back to where he needs to be.”

Adams full of praise for Linde, rejuvenated Piedt after spinners camp

Paul Adams, the Cape Cobras coach, has reflected on a satisfying and rewarding national spinners camp and has reaffirmed his belief in the star-qualities of the South African off-spinner Dane Piedt and the talented left-arm apprentice George Linde.

Two former South African spinners, Adams and Nicky Bojé, featured at the spinners camp. Part of the program was devoted to discussing appropriate tactics and game-plans for different phases during a match.

Linde, currently at the national academy, is a man with the potential and his disconcerting bounce and spin can set up early failure for top-batsmen.

“He just needs experience and greater consistency,” said Adams.
Linde has taken 74 wickets in 21 first-class games. The 23-year old also impressed during the Cape Cobras’ all-conquering Ram Slam T20 Challenge in 2014/2015.

Adams said Piedt’s confidence is back and they will scrutinize and check in with the player in the build-up to the South Africa A-tour to India.

Piedt suffered a serious shoulder injury in 2014, and struggled initially upon his return, but is rejuvenated after the national spinner’s camp.

The off-spinner is a man capable of bamboozling international batsmen with his array of attacking weapons. He captured eight for 152 on test debut for South Africa.
