South Africa team selection

Klusenar, Donald and Pollock were all in that era. Not sure why none of them were playing. Seems unlikely they would all be injured, but even more unlikely that they would all not be selected. They are all probably better than any bowler there, and even Pollock would practically make that team as a specialist bat. Can't remember the tournament, not sure.
Pollock was injured, the rest were forced 'rest'... Victorious in Dhaka - ESPNcricinfo

Jonker was meant to be in Sri Lanka if not for injury.
Not such a big fan. But definitely still in with a shot for that no 6 position in LO's, I think Gibson actually quite likes him. Miller under real pressure with Klaasens and Jonker around.

Piedt reckons Hamza (& Second) are pushing for Proteas places : Piedt: Hamza ready to play for Proteas
With Amla's decline and the state of SA's batting has an opportunity... de Bruyn still ahead for awhile though. Think after the WC we shall seem them being given opportunities.

From the article I read they seemed to think Miller is as good as in. Still think there is quite a bit of cricket to be played so the competition can only be a good thing.

Theunis de Bruyn's hundred was as good a first hundred in test cricket an SA batsmen has had. Considering his struggles against spin and generally before that, it was a shock to see such a successful game plan by our batsmen with the least tests and zero 100s.

Now is what will decide de Bruyn's future. Hundred making at the highest level gives confidence that he belongs so to me he will need to show with the pressure off a little he is an international test batsmen. It is where Bavuma has disappointed for me.

General consensus on Steyn's come back in Sri Lanka ? Thought he plugged away at good pace on unresponsive wickets. He had a good time in County cricket in lead up including a 5-for.

But his come backs T20s were ok for Hampshire but he has gone wicketless whilst Fidel Edwards has 6 and Steyn bowled 4 balls in an over and just walked off the field.

Something didn't feel right him not picking up sticks.

I have been confident with this come back but if this is serious I will start to have serious doubt for the first time.

This domestic season massive for SA cricket for me looking to the future

Not sure if that is a good thing or not.

In football (like a come back from a cruciate ligament injury) I would have maybe said his body is compensating which is a concern but after a shoulder injury I don't think your body would compensate for a groin injury.

But still this could mean age & his fast twitch fibres can't deal with the exertion to bowl as fast as he wants.

This is followed by the heel injury, which could be linked...... lets just hope for the best.

I have to say I can't imagine how bad our results would have been if Rabada had not come along.... truly think him a ABdV (when available) have been keeping SA competitive.

KG is a freak mate. For arguments sake just say Steyn retired on 421 with Pollock I reckon he will get it.

For all to see ABs genius in our home series wins over India and Australia. All very good to great test teams need a batting genius or 2. We desperately need to find them now that AB is gone.

If he stays fit can't see how he won't get it......our bowling production has been scary always having at least one great in the team since readmission. I'm waiting for the other shoe to drop like what happened with the allrounder production. Cross-fingers.

Not just the 421 - it's definitely on the cards for Rabada to get to 500.

Although we seem to be in a bit of golden age at the moment, in recent years having been able to play Steyn, Philander, Rabada, Ngidi, Abbott, and Morkel (probably the weakest of them, which is certainly saying something). I don't think the bowling stocks were ever quite so good.

Cricket South Africa Dale Steyn injury update: Scans have revealed a Grade 1 strain to the right groin. The estimated recovery time is 10-14 days. He is aiming to return to action for Hampshire in their match against Worcester on 4 September.
