It's largely a matter for the persons government 'recomending' the candidate to the queen. Barring exceptional circumstances, said recomendation will be accepted.
Yep. Anyway, I don't believe that the subcontinental nations accept knighthoods... someone please correct me if I am wrong. I don't know about South Africa either, but I assume they don't, and certainly Zimbabwe would not, and we have established that Australia do not any longer. So that just leaves England, New Zealand and the West Indies who could have players knighted.

Of the current crop, hhmmmmm, maybe Thorpe or even Nasser Hussain. How about Lara, star yet very level headed man.

Lara is a likely candidate in my view. Wouldn't expect it for Nasser or Thorpe though.

well i dont believe in knighthoods either...i think its silly and unbecomming of a soverign nation (note: i am canadian and i wont accept a knighthood either) but since when did Lara become levelheaded ?
umm hello.....he is anything-brilliant batsman, excellent fielder, etc. - anything but level headed....if you follow the caribbean scene, you'll find that he is much too much given to petulance and sulking.

Sort of surprised Both hasn't been given one yet. Blair is an arch populist & it'd go down well with the great British public; plus of course he's done loads of sterling work for charity with his walks.

Maybe youthful indiscretions counting against him? ;)

i am genuinely suprised, after his behaviour when England where having there way in the series last year, he doesn't seem like the person you describe him to be in WI

Yep, Elton John & Paul McCartney too. Obviously prodigious narcotic intake not necessarily a debar to a knighthood!
so why no Botham then!!!!!

Personally I think Keef Richards deserves a knighthood just for managing to make it to 60

He must have the constitution of an iron elephant!

Keef, I mean; not Beefy! Although I bet Both can handle his ale too. :D

Persons awarded knighthoods for services to cricket:
Sir Francis Lacey 1926
Sir Frederick Toone 1929
Sir Vijaya Ananda (The Rajkumar of Vizianagram) 1936
Sir Pelham “Plum” Warner 1937
Sir Donald Bradman 1949
Sir Henry Leveson-Gower 1953
Sir Jack Hobbs 1953
Sir Leonard Hutton 1956
Sir Frank Worrell 1964
Sir Neville Cardus 1967
Sir Garfield Sobers 1975
Sir George “Gubby” Allen 1986
Sir Richard Hadlee 1990
Sir Colin Cowdrey 1992
Sir Clyde Walcott 1994
Sir Everton Weekes 1995
Sir Alec Bedser 1997
Sir Conrad Hunte 1998
Sir Vivian Richards 1999

Learie Constantine was also made a knight in 1962, tho for his services as a barrister, politician and diplomat rather than to cricket.

Lacey and Toone were knighted for their services as cricket administrators. Cardus was knighted for his services to cricket (& other) journalism.

I do think that Oz now has it's own system of honours rather than accepting knighthoods from the old country anymore. Otherwise SR Waugh would've been a shoe-in.
I've always been struck by the number of knights fron the WI, especially when compared to the number from our own shores post WW2. That and the tendency towards batsmen rather than bowlers.

And I meant to add that, in the context of that list, Clive Lloyd can probably consider himself a bit unlucky not to have been asked to bow the knee.

Both interesting observations. I did think the batters over bowlers might be loosely attributed to class; up until about a generation ago batters were more likely to be of what used to be called the officer class, whilst bowlers (especially quicks) were the stout (usually northern) yeoman of the game.

My theory is somewhat deflated by knighthoods for Hobbs & Hutton (both working-class heroes after a fashion) and one for Gubby Allen, fast-bowler & aristo! :D

I guess the presence of so many Windies greats is partly due to the role cricket has played in defining Caribbean nationhood. Despite the inroads made in the area by football & (spits on floor) American sports in the last decade or so, cricket is still pre-eminent. It was the means by which the West Indies could stand up to (and for over two decades beat) the rest of the world. In a sense cricket defined the West Indies global identity.

I guess when considered in those terms it's no wonder the 3 Ws, Sir Garfield & Sir Viv were nominated by their respective governments. Clive Lloyd does seem to have been unlucky, but it's possible that his emigration to the UK may've counted against him. IIRC he's a UK passport holder nowadays too.

I'm sure you're right about the historical context of the WI. Going back to the batsman/bowler aspect, I suppose Wes Hall is the obvious candidate from the era when lots of their side did end up knighted.

Well, that just shows the lack of competition for such an honour!

Pretty sure Hadlee was the only one to still play a test after his Knighthood. The scoreboard actually read......"Sir Richard Hadlee"
