Silver lining in a disastrous series

Ollie Robinson vs Newzealand in 2021,even though it wasn't disastrous series but still England lost series at home.
It wasn't not a disastrous series, IMHO; we got a touch up in both tests, with rain really saving us in the first (no play at all on day 3 if memory serves) and windily failed to grasp the nettle when Kane made a very sporting declaration in an attempt to win. Dom Sibley batted for what seemed like a couple of ice ages for not very many when we were chasing ~270 off a potential 75 overs.

Given what a more positive mindset has achieved since the gutlessness seems incredible, really.

Speaking of which, I wouldn't necessarily say the 2022 series between the same sides was a disaster for NZ, but they were whitewashed. Daryl Mitchell's efforts standing out like a, well, silver lining.

after we were cheated out of a series win in 2008, most people focused on harbhajan's swearing (? ) but it gave us ishant sharma who owned ponting who's decline was about to start

he was **** for the next few years but his comeback was incredible and he was our ugly pat cummins for 3 or 4 years, always averaging around 20 with the ball. he was the guy around whom the modern indian fast bowling attack was built

That silver lining took another 7 years to actually materialize into something good

How was that a disastrous series? We competed well in 3 of the 4 Test ?

But for some reason we take some random selections on Ashes Tours who should never be there in the first place. No great surprise that many never see International Cricket again.

Another for England could be the 99-00 Tour of SA, more remembered now for the Hansie Cronje fiasco. But England were 2-0 down by that dead rubber and it could've been worse. A Yorkshire lad made his debut in the opening Test and found himself in the middle at 2-4. Whilst not setting the world alight, he showed he had grit and mettle and would end up being pretty instrumental in changing the fortunes of the England Test team. Unfortunately, it's allowed him over a decade of being an annoying **** in commentary boxes ever since!!
It was the turning point for England, although I think we also have gos to Gavin Hamilton, Darren Maddy, Chris Silverwood and Chris Adams.

The 2015 world cup has to be the ultimate for England. Just beforehand, we replaced Cook with Morgan but then our dire performance meant the writing on the wall for the awful Moores and Downton and a proper reckoning over then revolution of our decades old and outdated limited over selections and tactics that has culminated in the 2019 and 2022 world cup victories, and, I'd argue, paved the way for BazBall.

That Anderson didn't play another ODI (and Broad stopped not long after) probably also helped sustain their test careers into their late 30s and beyond too.

I'd say the defeat to Bangladesh was probably the real key moment. I suspect that had we won that and sneaked through to lose in a QF to India, it might not have been seen as the total disaster requiring complete overhaul which followed. A real silver lining to that fiasco.

Whatever it takes!!!
TBF, his average was less than 48. That is even lesser than Kohli's right now, for comparison. Not many were expecting him to find his groove back.

Steve Smith in the 2013 Ashes. He'd been around for a while without really establishing himself in the side, so his unbeaten 138 at The Oval kick-started his test career and we've been stuck with him ever since.
