Silver lining in a disastrous series

Thanks to CA YouTube channel uploading VVS LAXMAN 167 at Sydney today , I got this idea.

In 1999/00 , we were shellacked in Aus but we got VVS LAXMAN who served India for another 10 years . Before this series Laxman wasn’t rated much highly.

Similarly we got Kohli in 2011/12 tour of AUS which was another walloping.

What are some other instances of Team getting very good players from forgettable series?

From an England perspective, the Ashes in 2013-14 were an absolute disaster as Prior and Swann basically retired, Trott had a mental health crisis from the short ball assault and KP was fighting with most of his team mates. But in amongst that carnage a young ginger lad made his debut in the 2nd Test, scored a ton in Perth, took a 6fer in Sydney, topped the England run averages and took the second most number of wickets.

He turned out to be quite a useful cricketer, and, is it turns out, a skipper too.

On the terrible 2019 tour of Australia Jeet Raval was a walking wicket in the 1st test. The NZ selectors randomly moved Tom Blundell from backup keeper to opening the batting at the MCG. He scored a brilliant 100, did a satisfactory job opening the batting for another year before being replaced by Young/Conway, and now would keep for a world XI following Pant's unfortunate crash.

Prior to this tour Blundell had scored a century on debut vs the WI when Watling was injured, but no one had any idea just how good he would become.

I was so annoyed he went on tour instead of Woakes that year.

Turned out ok I guess.

There was a Kiwi on the board I used to frequent who had it in for Blundell before the tour of England last summer. Turned out him and Mitchell were the two shining lights then too even if they were seemingly favoured by batting against older balls.

Probably someone from Canterbury (the most biased one-eyed part of NZ) who would've wanted their keeper (Cam Fletcher who looks a decent player) in the team.

In the 1928/29 Ashes series Australia was hammered 4-1 at home, and even their one victory came in the dead rubber fifth Test. However, amidst that carnage came the most gleaming of all silver linings.

Off-spinner Don Blackie made his debut, and at the age of just 46 years old he showed that the future of Australian cricket was in the very safest of hands.

What a plot twist

In recent past the 2019 tour of India was a big disaster. We were absolutely no match for the Indians, we did give a test debut to Anrich Nortje ..
He had a bit of a nightmare start but he bowled with heart and something you can't buy..Pace..Real Pace.
I think the investment has paid off , pound for pound he's one of the best in the business now ..

Stokes was the immediate one I thought of. Actually weird that he’s the only Ashes pick I can think of that qualifies given we tend to debut about 29 people per away Ashes series

That was my first thought but England tend to respond to these heavy defeats in Australia by binning them off forever (Borthwick, Rankin, TCurran, Crane) and sticking with the people we debut in the summer straight after (Prior, Moeen, Buttler, Leach, Scurran).

But for some reason we take some random selections on Ashes Tours who should never be there in the first place. No great surprise that many never see International Cricket again.

Another for England could be the 99-00 Tour of SA, more remembered now for the Hansie Cronje fiasco. But England were 2-0 down by that dead rubber and it could've been worse. A Yorkshire lad made his debut in the opening Test and found himself in the middle at 2-4. Whilst not setting the world alight, he showed he had grit and mettle and would end up being pretty instrumental in changing the fortunes of the England Test team. Unfortunately, it's allowed him over a decade of being an annoying **** in commentary boxes ever since!!
