Should Test nations copy the Duleep Trophy for FC cricket ?

Anyone following the Duleep Trophy ?

The cricket being played is on a higher level than most test matches, basically the best cricketers in India have been split into A/B/C/D teams who face each other in round robin FC matches..

Na india has 29 states thats why we have got duleep trophy to make sure best talent gets identified because in ranjis many medicore players make hay meanwhile eng aus sa have limted teams so it doesn't mean much

England have 18 (albeit with more overseas players than other countries, so I’d imagine there are probably a very similar amount of players to the slightly smaller SA system), I don’t think the number of teams is a problem here, more that the FC schedule being pushed to the fringes of the summer means certain types of cricketers are bound to slip through the cracks (hence Baz picking some very inexperienced spinners with average records at FC level). We’ve also introduced the Kookaburra ball for some rounds of the County Championship, but no concrete proposals to axe any counties

Doesn’t really make sense in Australia, WI and New Zealand though you could just do A vs B and not have 4 teams.

I’d do it in England (w/o overseas players), SL and Pak.

Not so sure about SA.

India also has the Irani Trophy which is essentially the Ranji winners vs the rest of India. Just the one game but it’s cool.

Dont need for pak and sl sl have school competition which produces cricketers meanwhile pak have switched to making teams based on provinces (states in pakistan)

Think they must make ranji into zonal format so that only quality cricketers get in otherwise too many crap players making hay

Pakistan have streamlined their FC comp, they reduced it to 6 teams in 2019 and have added 2 since, but you can’t say that getting rid of such wonderfully named teams as Khan Research Laboratories and Habib Bank Limited (the last champions of the old structure!) have helped their Test team in any way

England has split their system into two tiers anyway hasn't it?

Australia could do it with an A and B team, but I don't know when you'de fit it in to make sure national players are available.

Where would England ever get to make that that work over here, given the current timetable? It is common that the England players often are overseas on international commitments come the start of the new season or are at the IPL. That means they come back in May at the earliest and it is not uncommon for the international test summer to kick in shortly afterwards. Then you have the Hundred in July/August.

Just too many players away at different times to make it viable.

England could do this but it will be a bit of a cluster**** with the amount of teams, time and what players from counties go into which team

The other nations (Pakistan & Sri Lanka are doing their own versions) can't because of a small number of 1st class teams (South Africa aside)
