Should ODI cricket go?

“So during all my matches, in the morning, we would meet up, I go for a run, climbing or whatever it is that could really raise the heart rate”

So physically tiring that he needs to do a pre-match workout just to stay awake

I never said cricket was anywhere near as draining as any of those sports though. My point is chess is also nowhere near as physically demanding as cricket is.
Anand is hardly going to say "nah it's easy I just sit there and move a couple of pieces about" now is he?

There is still zero argument chess is anywhere near as physically draining as cricket.
Then why bring those sports into discussion. Let us keep it between cricket and chess.

You initially said that chess is not physically draining at all. Hope you now accept that it is physically draining. Then, we can start comparing it to cricket.

A spinner who hides in the field and bats at 11. Let us see how much it is different to a chess player sitting for hours and hours with all of his mind put into the game. The difference is as much as it is between a football midfielder and the spinner, which is the definition of mild exaggeration.

It looks like sarcasm from your end. But in a game where a minor mistake could lead to loss of championship title, staying awake is quite important.

You’re comparing the least demanding thing in cricket to the most demanding thing in chess and it’s still a lot more physically tiring to be that spinner.
You all are focused on the 'physical' word. At the highest level, mental drain can also take a toll on the physical aspects.

This discussion is dumb, but it’s made me realise that I can’t think of a single overweight chess player. Maybe Nepo? But I think he just has chubby cheeks.

I reckon chess is so absorbing that they forget to eat.
Yes, a single overweight player would have totally destroyed my side of discussion for a chess defence on a cricket forum. ?

True for a majority of sports
Again, let's keep it to cricket and chess alone. Staying awake in chess means working through all the permutations and combinations of possible plays every second of the game. Cricket gives leeway to relax the mind in the middle of the game.

Again, you know how much I love cricket. Bit weird for me personally to downplay cricket here. Think we can stop this discussion here or move it to off-topic. It is not really relevant to thread or the cc sub forum.

When I play cricket I stand around in a field and my legs get sore. When I get called to bowl, I promptly forget about the leg pain and bowl crap leggies at near-medium pace and am less drained. When I play chess I sit on a chair and I get a headache as I cannot chess well. Are headaches physical or mental? I suppose the line between the two adjectives is quite blurred. Anyway, the point is, I don't know actually.

After I had my covid last year and was getting the long covid symtoms so one day I went for a 25-30 minute jog felt fine after it so thought OK am ready to get back in to things and went to office next day worked on couple of presentations and when I came back in evening literally felt totally lifeless and couldn't move myself till 11 am next morning so yes mental exhaustion whuch I believe you get a lot in chess can be at times even more demanding on the body then any medium scale physcial work say like bowling spin.

Sorry to hear that. A good friend of mine has been suffering from long covid, and I know from him that it's a real bugger.
