I think he has a couple of years left in him. I didn't think he bowled that badly against SA- in the first test there were two excellent spells he got no reward for, and in the second he was injured after about 10 overs. And he was awesome against New Zealand.

Joke-bowler in India, but that was a bloody tough tour for quicks. Ishant was the only specialist fast bowler to average under 40. The pitches were so flat even Amit God Mishra only averaged 24. Reports of Lee's demise have been greatly exaggerated IMO.
How can you forget Blonde God Shane Watson's wickets at 30 odd???

Ishant averaged in the 20s. Zak's figures were disappointing.

They're both really good at throwing, except Lee throws from the boundary and Akhtar from the crease.

So Lee for me.

Anyway he's had just TWO bad series. India and SA. He got recently divorced. Give him a break, folks.

For me, if you are thinking on the field when both are in form, Skhtar dominates Lee all over, I mean, beating Lee to 100mph.
But Lee is way more consistent with Akhtar getting banned for this and that.

Shoaib probably the better bowler overall but with Vic on this one, depends on which Shaoib turns up. Lee in ODI's, though.

Akhtar out with knee injury

Karachi: Injury-prone Pakistan paceman Shoaib Akhtar has been ruled out of the two-match Test series against Sri Lanka next month. The 33-year-old paceman had an MRI on his troublesome left knee and after the report was handed to the Pakistan Cricket Board, their medical expert Dr. Sohail Salim said Akhtar will not be able to take part in the series.

The injury-prone fast bowler, whose ten-year career is besotted with injuries and discipline problems, was dropped from the third and final one-day match against Sri Lanka earlier this month as he failed to perform and was not hundred percent fit.

"He needs a keyhole surgery on his knee. There are loose bones floating in his knee. We must not linger on and an operation is a must,'' said Pakistan coach Intikhab Alam. As of now, Akhtar is likely to be out of action for three-four weeks.

Former captain Shoaib Malik questioned his commitment and fitness after the second match but took a U-turn before the third, saying that he never named Akhtar and was talking of all the eleven players in the team.

Sri Lanka return to Pakistan on February 14 to play a three-day side match and two Tests – the final dates of which are yet to be announced.

Akhtar had operations on both his knees in early 2006 forcing him to sit out of Pakistan's tour of Sri Lanka and England the same year. The controversial fast bowler was awarded central contract this year only after playing three Twenty20 matches in 2008. A hamstring injury forced him to sit out of all three one-day matches against the West Indies in Abu Dhabi in November last year.

He missed out on a contract last year through injury and lack of discipline. On his exclusion from the contract, Akhtar publicly criticised the PCB which imposed a five year ban on him in April. The ban was later reduced to 18 months with a fine of Rs seven million (one hundred thousand dollars).

Akhtar appealed against the ban in Lahore High court which was suspended. His appeal against the reduction of the ban and fine is still pending with the court.

I guess this should be the last we have seen of him in cricket, although with PCB, one can never rule out anything, including Imran Khan returning.

The story of Shoaib is unbelievably sad, hilarious and weird... all at the same time. Yet despite all his faults, you'd have to still say he's won more matches for Pakistan than Lee has for Australia.

So Shoaib it is.

Well Lee was part of a much stronger team for most of his career to date, so he was less likely to produce solo match winning efforts as he was competing with McGrath and Warne and Gillespie to do so. I CBA at the moment but I bet if you went through the records you would find that Lee has made at least as many really strong contributions to wins as Akhtar has. He has been a big part of both of Australia's 16 match winning streaks.

Pakistan win less games than Aus, and Shoaib would've been vital in a higher percentage of the games that Pakistan won, than Lee would have been in games won by Australia.

Yeah, when fit he's been much more important to Pakistan than Lee has been to Australia - at least for most of Lee's career. That said, that doesn't necessarily equate to being a superior player.
