For a lower middle order spot, I'd choose VVS over Chanderpaul any day of the week. Chanderpaul also failed miserably when he was called to bat up the order at 3/4 whereas VVS flourished. Also less selfish.

For a few years Chanderpaul was the best in the world. Despite being a quality player, Laxman was never even the best in his own team.

Anyone who at any stage considered Chanderpaul the best batsman in the world needs to be smacked in the head imo

Well he was no 1 in the test ratings from July 2008 - Feb 2009 so justifiably won the ICC Cricketer of the year 2008. (The Sir Garfield Sobers trophy).

He was also the best in the world in 2012. He regained the no 1 spot in April.

The rankings then had him at 1, AB 2, Kallis 3, Younus 4, Sanga 5

VVS was much better to watch and amazing in a crisis, but Chanderpaul was better.

Surprised to see you using ICC ratings but yeah, Shiv was pretty great at his peak

07-14 59 matches 99 innings 4980 @ 69.16 16 tons 25 50’s

In comparison Laxman had 17 total tons in his 225 innings career.

Chanders was pretty close to guys like G Smith and Root imo. Not sure if Laxman was at that level tbh but I might be underrating him.
