I thought it would be a good idea for managers to do a small piece about their selections each week in a thread, maybe just mention any changes in your side or just to put what you hope the side will get from the game.

ACT Comets Announce Line up for Round One

ACT Manager Simon Fitzsimmons today announced a pretty much as expected line up for their opening day clash in South Africa against rivals Northerns. The side will be captained by middle order batsman Owen Cardew and his deputy is South African keeper/batsman AB De Villiers.

The side features several young up and coming stars suh as Benji Marshall, Peter Marlowe, Yashpal Singh and Martin Phadke. However the only shock was the inclusion of young spinner George Goff in front of the highly rated Dean Bent. Goff will give te side some variation in attack with his left arm spinners and we are hoping he his low economy rate will frustrate the attacking batsmen of Northerns into some rash strokes.

The full team is
1 Martin Phadke, 2 Ed Howarth, 3 Ricky Ponting, 4 Yashpal Singh, 5 Misbah Ul Haq, 6 Owen Cardew (Captain), 7 AB De Villiers (WK and Vice Captain), 8 Benji Marshall, 9 Ryan Watson, 10 Peter Marlowe, 11 George Goff, 12th Man Alex Loudon, Manager Simon Fitzsimmons

First Class Debutant
Victorian Bushrangers Selection

1st XI: New Recruits Dave Hussey, Clissitt, Kale, Anderson, De Silva, Brett Lee, Ahmed and Guinness will start in the top side. Clissitt and Mike Hussey will open the batting, with skipper Hodge coming in at 3. Harwood and Ahmed will share the new ball, supported by Brett Lee. Spin will be provided by Guinness. With will hope to expose the weak bowling attack of the colts, and finally make some big score in WCC 4d.

2nd XI: The 2nd XI looks a lot like last season's top side at Victoria, Cam White will lead both 2nd XIs this season, and will hopefully work his way into the top next season. 4 Rookies: Bevan, Azharuddin, Kumara, Attewell, will also make their debut, hopeing for big things from these kids.

Unluckly missing out this week are: Pascoe, Sangakarra, Yovich, these guys will hopefully work hard at training and earn a spot in the side.

With the season start just under a week away, the naming of the Yorkshire XI saw no real surprises for their encouncter with Free State.
Although it's expected to be a pitch to benefit pace bowlers, Yorkshire manager Greg Thomas named Danish Kaneria as the spinning option in the 4 man bowling attack.

"The pitch will deteriorate and favour Danish. Like a lot of strategies in cricket, ours is based on winning the toss and batting, allowing Danish the opportunity to run through their (Free State's) batting line up in the final innings." Mr Thomas said at a training session today.
Yorkshire's attack is comprised of three fast bowlers, one of whom is an all-rounder, and a spinner.
Experienced batsman W Tendulkar is the only player from Yorkshire's squad last year to be playing for their First Class side this year.

Line up: M Dawn (c), L Vincent (wk, vc), K Agnew, F Evans, M Jayawardene, D Kaneria, P Laker, M Love, P Marsden, R Silva, W Tendulkar, Z Saeed(12th Man).

Western Australia have announced their first First Class line up for the new season. The main talking point is the selection of the 5 prong pace attack. "The WACA is suited to fast bowlers, so we have gone into this game with our 3 main strike bowlers in Milligan Jenkins and Dean, plus our two allrounders in Ryder and Beasley"

Western Australia go into the first round, with some good preseason form behind them. "The quickes were sensational in preseason, its up to the battsman to show everyone what they can do"

Cope and Symonds miss out

Omar Cope and Andrew Symonds have missed out on selection for Colts 1st match of the season against Victoria. Cope and Symonds poor form during the pre season series against Aukland and the Foxes, has meant that both will start the season in the 2nd XI. Top order batsmen Kenny Andrews will take Symonds spot and bat at three after a some solid pre season form. Quintaz Birch will take the 4th bowlers spot to try and add some extra depth to a slightly weak batting line up and provide a 2nd spinner option to partner Murali Madugalle.

1st XI:
Ashraf Ali (vc), Oliver Phillips, Kenny Andrews, Ed Joyce, Thiru Alwis, Ian Bell, Ranasinghe Wickramaratne (c/wk), Quintaz Birch, Upul Gordon, Ellepola Exley, Murali Madugalle

I wouldn't be making those type of statements before a ball has been bowled, anyway we may struggle when it comes to the 4th bowler, but our top three bowler would be up there with the most sides in WCC. Exley (17), Gordon (21), Madugalle (21).

Gavaskar in for Tikolo

Mashonaland manager Andy Cameron named a first XI side that contained just the one surprise for Mashonaland fans. Kenyan batsman Steve Tikolo, who endured a run of form leading into the season that had been described as 'rock bottom,' was replaced by Indian middle order bat Rohan Gavaskar, who will bat at number six for the Zimbabwean team in their clash against Queensland. Cameron commented that, although other players had gone through similar rough patches, their spots in the team were never seriously contested.

First XI side:
Q Oulton, J Lewis (c), Q Roll, W Gibbs, P Mullick, R Gavaskar, B Straw, J Midlane+, B Joshi, D Prasad, B Matthie.

Kent Line-Up Named For Season Opener

Kent's super-manager Stephen Burke today unveiled the side that would take on NSW in the first match of the first season of the new revamped WCC format. Rob Llewellyn was named captain of the side and will also skipper Kent in the one-day competition. Jeetan Singh got the nod over Ron Ballard for the keeping duties. The inexperienced bowling line-up has the full backing of Burke to get the job done.

Kent 1st XI to play NSW: R Llewellyn (c), A Muzumdar, J Maher, G Gow, N Adam, A Lovell, J Singh (wk), C Fish, T Hawkins, M Fayyaz, R Jesuraj

Province Unveil First XI

Phil Jaques and Jim Schofield were the unlucky two in the Western Province squad as the two missed out on a first XI spot at Newlands. After much speculation over who would take the field for Province Tony Ballard and Bishop Morley did enough during the friendlies to win a spot in the first XI.

First Eleven
P Abid Ali, B Morley, G Ghambir, F Hammett, F Funston, S Watson, A Puttick, Y Porter, T Ballard, O Clarke, E Tate

No surprises as experienced campaigner Shane Watson was announced as captain.

When asked what he expected from the game Province manager Ian Markus was confident in responding "we're going to Australia to get the season off to a winning start. Western Australia are definately one of the weaker sides and we don't fear them".

The team flies out to Australia tonight.

Rookies to be let loose at Colombo Oval

Colts rookies Jayasuriya Squires, Ebrahim Stone, Sri Samarasekera and Mahela El Zabir will make their debut for the Colts 2nd XI against Victoria 2nds. Other noticable selection were the return to the 2nd XI of captain Gerry Liebenberg, who returns after missing the pre season series due to the birth of his 2nd child. Vice captain Shikhar Dhawan also returns to the 2nd XI after playing in the 1st XI during the pre season, to gain more exposure against quailty bowling attacks. But the biggest pressure will be on Andrew Symonds and Omar Cope who got dropped from the 1st XI after some poor performances during the pre season.

2nd XI:
Jayasuriya Squires, Ebrahim Stone, Gerry Liebenberg (c/wk), Imraan Khan, Andrew Symonds, Shikhar Dhawan (vc), Sri Samarasekera, Mahela El Zabir, Omar Cope, Andrew Tweedie, Jason Lewry

Colts' grade watch will be on Salman Butt, who just missed out on the final XI to allow Stone and Squires to open the batting together.

Warwickshire today realised that the first round of play was actually this weekend, and called the team back from their training camp in Dubai. "Gosh, this came as a surprise" noted super stud and all round good guy Daniel Howarth.

They are expected to announce the team tomorrow or the next day, but definitely before Friday

WCC Auckland "Confident"

Auckland returns to the fold of WCC with a revamped line-up and big expectations. Opening the season is a first-class team featuring no less than five players making their Auckland debuts. While some may lean to inexperience as a factor against the team, Liam Camps is confident in the ability of the new signings.

"Dwayne (Leverock) is perhaps the key player in this side, as how well he goes will determine the strength of the seam attack this season. He's joined by the now experienced Rennie Plummer though, who has served three seasons in this league. It will be a difficult adjustment process for the new guys, but again, we're all confident," said Camps.

Leverock is key

Joining Leverock are Gregory Huckerby, James Godwin, Khurram Khan and Rangana Herath as the new faces. The composition of the team represents an exceptional top order in terms of sheer weight of expected runs.

The batting still centres around Jack Smith, however, who was incredible in his last season for WCC Auckland. Camps will surely expect more of the same from his leader and leading batsman.

Perhaps the most interesting selection is that of Kevin Godwin as a bowling allrounder. Godwin has been used in the capacity of a genuine allrounder thuis far in his career, with very little emphasis granted to his bowling. Now WCC Auckland enters the season opener with two specialist seamers aside Godwin, and two major spin options.

"The hope is to pose some depth. With a player of the calibre of Kev (Godwin) in the mix, things look in good shape if he can succeed with the ball," said Camps.

WCC Auckland 4D Round 1 Team:
Z Roberts (Bat: 54)
G Huckerby (Bat: 51, Bowl [OS]: 49.80)
G Burley (Bat: 47.60)
J Smith (C) (Bat: 56.90)
J Godwin (Bat: 53.50)
K Khurram (Bat: 47.00, Bowl [SLA]: 24.72)
R Campbell (wk) (Bat: 34.60)
K Godwin (Bat: 43.40, Bowl [RFM]: 28.40)
D Leverock (Bat: 15.40, Bowl [LFM]: 14.50)
R Plummer (Bat: 13.40, Bowl [RF]: 22.74)
R Herath (Bat: 16.40, Bowl [SLA]: 23.93)

Free State Announce First Class 1st XI

The South African team Free State has made known it's team for their first First Class match of the season. After announcing their One Day 1st XI recently, the Free State management decided to do the same. The announcement also included the naming of the 2nd XI too. Andrew Halse has been named as captain for the 1st XI while the vastly experienced Edwin Bacher has experienced likewise. The only non selection in doubt by the Free State management was that of Wilson McPhee. "McPhee is a phenomenal batsmen but we felt is inexperience might come to the fore in this match. We felt it best to make him play 2nd XI games at the start of the season to build his confidence and enjoy a good run of form," stated Xavier Rose, the Free State manager. Rose also added, " If he can do these things he'll find himself in the 1st XI in no time." Free state have alse decided to give rookie Gary Bateman his first runout as the spearhead of the 2nd XI bowling attack. " It'll be a testing match for the youngster but we'll hope that he performs admirably and backs up our faith in him," said Rose.

These are the teams in batting order:
1st XI: A Halse (capt), S Westwood, Z Court, S Maxwell, I Bowes, S Kroll, T Dilshan (wk), G Newlands, N Ul Hasan, Z Eccelstone, H Venkat

2nd XI: E Bacher (capt), W McPhee, R Sarwan, I Javed, S Jewell, B Haddin (wk), F Mohammed, D Nicholson, R Cunningham, G Bateman, O Walcott

Surrey today unveilled their new rookies to the public in an open training session.

Alex Benjamin, a new fast bowler specialising in the OD form of the game, Alex averaged 24.22 in the Australian Grade Cricket league he played in the winter.

David Page is a young, very promising batsman who ripped up his league, averaging 40 in OD and 33.57 in the FC game.

Ian Ridding the only specialist bowler from the Surrey system, will be bowling his left arm spin in the Surrey Second XI team, and battling to get a spot next year.

Michael Buxton is a very promising young batsman, averaging just under 40 in both forms of the game. His opening in 4D will be interesting indeed.

Sorin Bissex is the new hope for European cricket, the Romanian, who came into the Surrey system after seeing the good work by Jamee Gray (who is half Romanian himself). The wicket-keeper will be coming in at 3 in the 4D second eleven team and is a great hope for the future.

Tasmania XI to face Mumbai

G Eaton
B Beresford
K Bulman
V Chandrasekh
M Goodwin (c)
S Kotak
R Warren (wk)
J Sharma
M Lampard
R Dhammika
M Sami

For the first game of the season against Mumbai, Tasmania will field a line-up featuring only two players who have previously represented them before, Sharma and Dhammika. Two notable exclusions are young batsman Suresh Raina and contracted fast bowler Mike Rice. When questioned about this, manager Alex Crampton said:

" Suresh is a very good player. We decided to leave him out for this game because we want him to get some experience in the Second XI before he goes in at the deep end. Leaving him out also allows us to have Shiv (Kotak) as our fifth bowling option. Suresh will start in our OD games however.

"As for Mike, that was a very tight call. We decided to go with Sami as he's been bowling better in nets so far this season, and has a better career record."

"We felt two spinners were a necessity at Mumbai, especially as spin is our strength. Sharma and Dhammika are two very good bowlers, Sharma's also handy with the bat. Hopefully they can prove as successful a partnership as Sharma and Sammels were last year."

Lancashire coach Dave Richards has named the following side for the opening game of the WCC season against Leicestershire at Old Trafford:

Yapp
Anderton
Midlane*
Aronstam
Truscott
Reza
Patwardhan+
Fernando
Mongia
Freeman
Diwan

The strong performance of the bowling attack in preseason has convinced the managment of the 4 bowler approach. Albus Freeman and Terry Truscott will make their full WCC debuts, whilst there are Lancashire debuts for captain Midlane, Reza, Patwardhan and Diwan. Freeman is expected to lead the attack, with Diwan performing the spinners role. Dissapointing preseason batting form, with Midlane the only man to really do himself justice, and this results in the extra man in the middle order. Though recently the weather has improved, meaning that the substandard pitches of preseason should not be replecated from now on in. Patwardhan will be looking for an accomplished display behind the sticks.

Star Man: Albus Freeman - 88 wickets @ 10.17 in preseason looking to carry on this form.
