Towns would be disappointed in the captain declaring while he was on 92*. I'm delighted to be picked in the Staff XI, hoping for a big performance.

BARNES OUT
Um, quick question. How didn't Arnold and Cloete make the FC Batting XI?

Code:
Player T I NO Runs Avge HS 100 50 Ct St
A. Cloete 9 18 3 1015 67.67 262 3 2 6 0

A little better than Dwyer and Cunningham (and Chaulk)(and Towns and Jaso)(and Garven)(and Cribb)(and Mork):

Staff XI v Dev League XI
at Pickford

Scorecard
Ball By Ball

Two collapses prevented a victory for the staff eleven, who nevertheless fought well enough to make the game a serious contest for eight sessions. By the end of the ninth, however, Borcich and the Dev League XI were in firm control, and eased home for the eight-wicket win despite Gough's early breakthrough.

More willing for a contest than in the previous game, Garven inserted his opponents, relishing the thoughts of four seamers spearing in at Arunava Das. Yet, Camps bashed boundaries around the ground, milking 37 off 35 balls and leading to a double bowling change after just nine overs. It mattered little. Camps made his way to 68 before chopping behind to Jasotharan, but with 125 up before lunch things already looked positive against a Dev League side lacking star spinners.

Runs flowed just as easily on the other side of lunch. Helped by extras and drops, the total reached 200 with Das approaching the hundred, but the final two overs before tea shattered the Staff XI; Das, pulling towards the century, was masterfully held by Watt, Fuller top-edged to Cribb for 36, and Crampton began what was to be a woeful personal game by padding up to Watt, lbw for a three-ball duck. The Staff XI had lost three wickets for a solitary four from Ritchie, who only lasted 14 more balls before edging behind to Jasotharan.

Gelman, Bennett and Rose all provided runs to the best of their ability, but the second new ball was too much for the tail to overcome. Despite Rose's unbeaten 30, Watt finally got some movement out of the new ball, shattering the stumps of Bennett on the way to figures of six for 94. The staff were all out for 355, a credible score, but still a disappointment given their situation at 223 for one.

With the staff team lacking any obvious top class pacers, Kev Gough was sent in to share the new ball with Black player of the year Zac Gelman. And once again, Young was floored on four, giving a return chance to Gough. Amid showers and loud appeals, Smith and Young made it to the half-century either side of tea, and continued in control through the afternoon session. It took 59 overs and 218 minutes to separate the two batsmen, Reddlapalli holding a sharp chance to take care of Young, and seven overs later the score stood, as it had for the Staff XI, at 223 for one.

However, the class in the Dev League XI showed through. Smith hooking to Bennett while on 97 did not incite a collapse, as Cribb and Towns batted through 45 minutes to the close of play; despite clouds and a new ball on the third morning, the Staff XI failed to take their advantage until Camps was introduced shortly before noon. He took out Garven for a golden, with Cribb striking out to Pickup's waiting hands on 40, then removed Kearsley half an hour later with a tempting short ball driven straight to Pickup.

Bennett and Pickup exploited variable bounce after tea to take a wicket each, and with seven wickets down the Dev League XI led by three. Indeed, had not Thompson's barely visible inside edge been seen by the umpire, they would have been eight down with Watt and Thomas remaining. Instead, Thompson plundered the strike, and though Crampton failed to hold on to a sharp chance on 45, Thompson fully deserved the belligerent half-century. Fuller eventually struck to remove Thomas, but the damage had been done, and the staff resumed 96 behind.

Thompson's golden touch continued before tea, as Das felt a length ball through to Young at third slip. It would take a massive rearguard from Fuller and Camps to get anywhere in this game; for an hour after tea said rearguard appeared, as the two punished bad balls and put on a stand of 55 before Camps was held at short leg off Borcich's bowling. It was just reward for a fiery spell; he had already had Fuller dropped, and now went on to decimate the remainder of the middle order. Ritchie held out for 30 minutes, before giving a limp catch to Watt. Crampton completed the pair in Borcich's next over. Gelman faced out the four balls and two no-balls remaining in that over, only to flash to Towns the first ball of the next. And finally Bennett was held by Watt while on 9. With five catches, Borcich had taken five for 11 in 10.4 overs, three of the runs being no-balls.

Borcich effectively killed the game with that spell in the fading light of Pickford, despite attempts of resistance from Fuller (first wicket to fall on the fourth morning for 59), Rose (second last out for 36) and Pickup (unbeaten on 22). Borcich completed the six-for with the help of Young's safe hands, and the staff set a meagre target of 113. Not even Gough's beautiful first over, yielding one wicket, an edged four, and a run out chance, could give the staff any permanent hope, as Smith and Towns controlled the bowlers and went within 12 of the target before Smith dragged Pickup on. Cribb then bashed three fours to win the game.

International Captain
Happy with my batting return in the FC games as well as my bowling return in both forms, especially with all the wickets ('sup Dan  ). Wattles and Borcich running the show quite nicely against the staffers, great show.

EDIT: And yeah, declaring with me on 92 when the score is 591 is sad. :p Disappointing for the fans, Garven!
