This pic probably says something about the cricket of those days.

You actually had to hit the ball REALLY hard for hitting a six. The bats were not thick chunks of willows tailormade for the David Warners and Yusuf Pathans. The size of the playing ground was probably more important to the cricket-businessmen than the size of the gallery area (yes, they were stupid). And mis-hits didn't go for sixes. Every Tom, Dick and Afridi was not known for big hitting then. And even if a bowler didn't get a wicket every ball he deceived a batsman, it was at least made sure that a bowler wouldn't concede a six in the delivery he deceived a batsman.

IMO Fazal Mahmood ahead of Chanderpaul or one of the three openers. With Kapil and Ames in the side you might as well play the extra bowler.

+Sir Clyde Leopold Walcott - one of the 3 W's, an all-time great, at one time the greatest batsman in the world, scored nearly 4000 runs at over 56 in only 44 test matches, an accomplished and powerfully built stroke-maker, he scored 15 test centuries, and was a quality wicket-keeper, before he had to give up the gloves due to back injuries. In 1997, he became the first non-Englishman to be the Chairman of the ICC.

William Maldon Woodfull - Australian captain, retired shortly after the Bodyline series, and England's leg-theory tactics, known for his calm temperament, outstanding defensive technique, and unmatched patience at the crease, averaged 46 in a time of uncovered pitches and fierce, intimidatory bowling with almost no protective equipment, and showed great resilience against Bodyline bowling.

Alvin Isaac Kallicharran - West Indian batsman who outbatted his diminutive stature, known for beautiful strokes off the front and back foot, to both sides of the wicket, was captain of the islands following Lloyd's resignation, scored 12 centuries in just 66 tests.

Bishan Singh Bedi - one of the greatest left-arm spinners of all-time, known for his flighting of the ball, and his guile as a bowler, took more FC wickets than any other Indian, captained India in 22 Tests, was India's first full-time coach, a connoisseur of spin bowling, and one of the best of his generation.

Courtney Andrew Walsh - devastating fast bowler, captain of the West Indies on 22 occasions, retired as the leading wicket taker in Test match history, over 500 Test wickets, more than 1800 FC wickets, Glenn McGrath is the only seam bowler to have taken more Test wickets, known for his opening bowling partnership with Curtly Ambrose, took 34 wickets in a series against England in 2000, one of the greatest workhorses in Test history, known for his longevity and fitness, he is the only fast bowler ever to bowl 30000 test deliveries.
