Ah, you're getting the old and the new mixed-up.
That's why the speed-gun they attempted to use in 1996 (and before) didn't work, measuring only the horizontal speed.
As Paul Allott mentions in Wisden 1999, the breakthrough in 1998 was that they found something that measured horizontal and vertical speed concurrantly.
And the difference has never been as much as 10mph. 2 or 3 at best.

oh right...fair do's

Did he come up as the bowler was running up? I tried that once in a game and the other team said it was bad sportsmanship. He was out by a mile and the square leg didn't give it.
That's strictly forbidden.
No fielder may "change position" (ie outside the accepted walking-in) once the bowler has commenced his run-up.
Someone even tried to do Alec Stewart for some rubbish or other when he took 3 or 4 steps up repeatedly having received the signal from Goughie for the slower-ball.

Well... it's certainly not something I can remember ever happening before (may have done, even I don't remember everything...)

No, he came up before McGrath began his run-up. Its just that McMillan is an idiot and decided to charge anyway.

I remember Jack Russell coming up as Mark Alleyne was running up several times, Alleyne had signalled his slower ball before he ran in.

McMillan may be an idiot but there are 2 or 3 other occasions I can think of when a bowler has been stupid enough to charge a seamer with the wicketkeeper standing-up.
One such was Hansie Cronje at Newlands against Mark Alleyne and Chris Read in 1999\2000.

Yes, indeed, maybe this modernisation has made an impact on you...
