Edge to Root. Because imo, he definitely faced better attacks and though he failed vs 2 of the three excellent attacks he faced, he made runs vs the other.

much less support, much more bowling friendly era and his series against Bumrah is absurd, as much of an absurdity as the Steyn series

Root's disappointing ashes and dry series in a home loss to nz brings his year down a bit imo. Series away to India was patchy too apart from one double ton. Tendulkar was absurdly consistent except for one bad series at home vs a crappy nz attack.

Sachin made runs vs Steyn and Morkel too in SA
Yes that was an excellent attacks but outside of that, not much else. Root would've faced Jamieson, Southee, Wagner and Boult from NZ. Then Root had to face Cummins, Lyons and Starc. Finally he had an atg series vs Shami, Bumrah and Jadeja.
