Lara is the clear cut winner here, he destroyed Murali like nothing and bashed Warne so bad he got dropped.

Sachin, I do remember struggling with 2000s Murali a little bit and his ability against spin did go downhill while Lara was slaughtering Warne, Macgill and Kaneria (I know) like nothing even at the end.

Third is Viv, nothing against him but he was born too late to play Lakers and other wet pitch merchants of England and too early to play Warne or Murali, he got to play Underwood and the Indian spin quaret and did absolutely obliterate them. Best player of pace here though, a level above the other two.

Viv vs The Indian Spin quaret

9 matches, 909 runs @ 70, 4 hundreds and 2 fifties.

Viv vs the Pakistani spinners

11 matches, 888 runs @ 49.3, 2 hundreds and 5 fifties

Viv vs Derek Underwood

5 matches, 974 runs @ 121.7, 4 hundreds and 2 fifties.

all series on some spin friendly wickets. while Viv is at bottom, I think he deserves to not be placed tiers below, just a bit unlucky to never get to face Warne or Murali.

I also don't buy Viv being a tier above the others vs pace. At peak, probs. Overall, hell nah.

your top 10 bats against pure pace?
Not in any strict order (considering high pace):

Viv
Sobers
Waugh
Tendulkar
Smith
Kohli
Lloyd
Hutton
Ponting
Chappell

Honourable mentions:

Lara
Barrington
Pollock
Headley
Gavaskar
Border
Weekes
Barry

Don't know what to do with Don tbh, Hobbs to an extent too.

how much did your soul hurt typing Ponting?

anyway, when I rate "pace", I take swing and seam bowling together and I believe Viv really is the ultimate there, the swingers of Botham and Willis (prime), to the reverse swing of Imran, to the pace and bounce of Thomson to the complete package of Hadlee and Lillee, Viv really did it all. so personally, I don't got a few guys that high. But, people like Viv/Sobers/Sachin/Waugh/Hutton/Smith make it anyway, Ponting and Kohli don't for me personally due to their issues with movement.

I pressed backspace 6 times....

If combined, then take out Kohli and Ponting (probs Lloyd too) and add Don, Hobbs and one of Lara or Gavaskar or Headley or Pollock

idk why people gaslight people into thinking playing express pace is some kind of big feat tbh, especially considering most ATG pacers are 130kmph to 145kmph, with evolution of sports science and nutrition pacers have decreased their speed if anything because they know express pace doesn't do much except shave off your longetivity. IMO, one's ability against swing/seam is a lot more useful than against express pace.
