I wouldn’t go either. But we’re at the stage where people could make the choice weighing up their own risks and to quote Matt Hancock “take personal responsibility”. On second thoughts it probably should be empty.

Thanks to the power of hindsight, this England formation just straight nullified those members of the squad that were actually class, for the sake of putting also rams in their comfort zones. Also Glen Johnson was okay at that point in time.

It's hideous isn't it? I'd be surprised if any of them played 4-4-2 at their clubs at that stage, possibly Defoe.

I think Carrick was in the squad and didn't play at all, which I don't remember being enormously controversial. That was the season he cost us in the CL QF with some pathetic tracking when we were 3-0 up against Bayern, and IIRC Fergie froze him out for the rest of the season. Even so, when you watch it with 2021 eyes they're absolutely crying out for a player exactly like Carrick.

Tbh iirc England were crying out for a player like Carrick for most of the time he was available. For some reason managers just refused to pick him. I remember Sven actually seemed to prefer Lesley King in midfield to Carrick for some bizarre unfathomable reason

Are you sure this happened? I am not saying you are wrong but it doesn't ring a bell at all

Yeah there were various qualifiers/friendlies in the run up to WC 2006 where King started as CM.

The reason I remember this is because @Pothas was really annoyed about it at the time haha

It didn't happen that often, but there were times when Gerrard and/or Lampard were injured, and Carrick was playing brilliantly for Spurs, and everyone was like "now he'll finally get his chance", but Sven was like "nah soz"

I seem to remember that Steve McLaren also barely picked him either, and Roy Hodgson refusing to pick him in 2012 despite England barely having any fit CMs at the time was also inexplicable. Maybe he was injured or something, I don't remember now

I remember he started against Ecuador in 2006 and at half time Hansen and co did a segment on how good he was and what he brought to the team. But he didn't play the QF against Portugal and I don't remember why. Could have been an injury.

I really didn't love him at the time and I still think the revisionist consensus overlooks some serious flaws. He was often not sharp enough for the very biggest games. Lot of this type of thing:

Using him to control a game against Ecuador but then cutting him out against a physical Portugal side might not even have been the worst call. I'm pretty sure it's what Fergie would have done.

EDIT: this one was right before the 2010 WC, it really cost us. Managers didn't trust him for a reason.

Mad, don't remember it but he tried all sorts in those qualifiers. There was talk for ages about playing Beckham as a deep lying midfielder with wing backs, then we lost to NI doing just that and never spoke of it again.

Sven brought Carrick in from nowhere against Ecuador in the tournament though didn't he? Or was that Hargreaves ?
