Western Province Update

Following on from a very successful First Class round, Western Province seeks to continue it's good OD form in Round 8.

Against Leics, WP won the 1st XI game quite comfortably, due to great batting efforts from Hammett and Funston, while Ed Tate took 12 wickets for the match. Tate had been a little below par throughout the season to this point, but stood up last week and showed the form that many WP fans have come to expect from him over a long time.

A runfest was to be had in the 2nd XI game, as it petered out to a draw. Highlights included Chilvers' strong 2nd innings bowling effort, Abid Ali's 2 half centuries, and a mammoth 1st innings stand between Iqbal and Patel.

There have been a few changes to the One Day outfits that appeared in Round 7. Grant Shaw has been demoted to the 2nd XI. Earlier in the season, the coaching staff were prepared to put up with his lack of wickets while he continued to keep a low economy rate, but in recent weeks has leaked far too many runs. In an interesting move, Tony Ballard will take his place, despite not playing in the 2nd XI last week. Both teams continue to tinker with their batting orders, and hopefully the outstanding form of Zane Ardley (448 runs @ 112, SR: 97.39, 3 x 50, 1 x 100) can continue.

Nadu's XI as deep as the Marianas Trench

Last week: Tamil Nadi beat Hampshire by an innings and 30 runs (FC)
The Tamil Nadu 2nd XI added another scalp to their "march" when they romped to an innings victory over Hampshire, a fellow contender for the FC 2nd XI title. Usual 1st teamer Pete Kumble was brilliant with the ball, snaring match figures of 38-12-66-8, aided by Sullivan (24-6-66-4) and Durani (28.3-6-94-4) in skittling the visitors for 174 and 151 respectively. The pitch, which obviously helped the bowlers, failed to stop captain Martin van Jaarsveld, who stroked his way to a brilliant 366-ball 110. Gary Glenday chipped in with 71 as did Oscar Bolton, who fell an agonising 2 runs short of his half-century, scoring his 48 runs off 129 balls. It was an important victory for the team who have struggled this season due to the sad off-field fortunes of manager Robertinho Dela Cruz.

This week: Guyana vs Tamil Nadu (OD)

This week's one day fixture will see bottom-placed battlers Tamil Nadu travel to Guyana, the leagues leaders. It will be a tough test, with manager Dela Cruz boldly deciding to opt for an incredibly deep batting lineup, with the top 9 all recognised batsmen.

"After looking at some of Guyana's previous results, we've come to some very interesting conclusions," Dela Cruz announced, "We're very well prepared tactically for this game and I think that while we're certainly up against it, I wouldn't count us out. We're fortunate enough to be blessed with an extremely potent batting lineup in which I have alot of faith. Touch wood, but I think they'll rise to the challenge."

The lineup had several surprise inclusions, most notably usual 1st teamer David Powell, who replaces Sullivan, who himself was the subject of a surprise call up to the 1sts.

Hampshire winners on minefield.
Yorkshire were looking to get back on the winners pdoium against a strong Hampshire side but were outclassed by a superior bowling outfit on a pitch that was deadly for batsman.
Yorkshire were skittled out for under 150 with no batsman making a score in the 30's. In reply, Hampshire lost 7 wickets chasing down the small total, showing how bad the pitch was for batting.

It was the complete opposite four days later as Yorkshire 2nd's steam rolled their opponents. All-rounder Anup Dave smashed a record 150* to set up a big win for the side.

A couple of changes were made ahead of the big match against table leaders South Australia. Struggling opener K Agnew was dropped in favour of F Yashpal who has been tearing it up in seconds. Lou Vincent heads back down the order so R Kripal Singh can again join his friend Yashpal at the top.
